When rounding to two decimal places...

117 14 July 22, 2012 at 06:51 PM in Question
What would you round 5.3345 to?

I say 5.33 but someone else says 5.34. The complete answer to the problem changes a good amount for the different values. Anyone know the exact rules to rounding in this situation?

Answered that already but the number is 5.3345 to start, not 5.335.

if the question was round 5.3345 to three decimal places what would the answer be?

I think the answer boils down to just disregarding everything past the 4 since it's less than 5 and the 3 stays a three.

I did it in two steps which was wrong.

5.33 if rounding to two digits. nod Glasses2

You only round it once, you don't round and then round again. Nono1

OK, now round 5.335 to two digits.

That would be 5.34

not true. start with 5.335 and try any rounding calculator you like. The answer is 5.34.

I think for most people, 5.3345 rounds to 5.33. But IMO 5.34 is a more accurate representation.

That would be most certainly true if there were no mention of what decimal places to round to but there is that caveat so that has to be taken into consideration. In this case, 5.33 is correct as the 5 in the ten thousandths place is inconsequential to the rounding up or down.

5.3345 rounds to 5.33

well then riddle me this:

1) Round 5.3345 to 3 decimal places. (answer = 5.335)

2) Take your answer from 1 and round it to two decimal places. (answer = 5.34)

3) Why are the answers not the same?

agreed
Because, your original math problem and the math problem stated above are not the same math problem.

5.3345 rounded to the second decimal equals 5.33

5.3345 rounded to the third decimal equals 5.335

5.335 rounded to the second decimal equals 5.34
