Meeting people from the innerwebz

Has anyone ever met anyone they only know from online? How was it? Awkward? Fun? Unexpected? Interesting?

How would you feel about someone you've only talked to online and on the phone staying with you the first time you met them?

Someone I have been chatting with online/on the phone for 6 years is coming to town and staying with me for 3 days. I feel like I know her well online, but I'm not sure how I feel about her staying with me for 3 days. I'm excited about it, but apprehensive at the same time. It doesn't help that I have a touch of social anxiety to begin with. Then you hear horror stories about people who you thought you knew online being false. Thoughts? Is this unwise? Experiences?

Schooby was the first internet person I ever met Big Grin
It was back before either one of us started working for SD.

2nd one was redsolar

Then 1.5 years ago, met a bunch more of them in Vegas .. serra, Mr SD, bryantq, and more

Very positive experience .. it's so nice to meet face to face .. was not awkward at all

I've met MichCamper, Redjen910, Schooby, briang, ggx, UTR, BikerEric, damsel, and a few others that I can't remember their usernames. All were very nice.

i met an old school aol chatroom friend from the late 90s IRL (in a public place laugh out loud) about 6 years after we first started chatting, when he happened to get sent to my area for a 1 yr work placement. We recently met up again (~5 yrs from the last time) now that I've moved to his area to be closer to my extended family. He invited me to a BBQ at his house with a bunch of his friends. It wasn't awkward either time, except for trying to explain to his college friends how I was also a "college friend" to avoid the whole "we-met-on-the-internet-but-it's-not-like-that" even though I didn't go to the same school as they did (we started chatting when we were both bored college students).

Being post-college with a real = not hanging around on aim/gchat/etc much so we rarely communicate more than 1-2/yr, but like several other friends I don't see/talk to much (mostly due to distance), it's easy to pick up where we left off.
