4. Water changes are mandatory (this is just to reiterate, not in argument to the quoted comments). 10-50% once a week, depending on how stocked/fed/etc. When you do a water change you need to use the SAME TEMPERATURE water as in your tank. You also ideally need to add in dechlorinator PRIOR to adding the water to the tank (this is only applicable for smaller tanks where you fill with buckets). If you cannot do this or you have a huge tank that fills from a water line you need to dose the tank with enough dechlorinator for the TOTAL VOLUME OF THE TANK (very important). I do 50% changes once a week. Doesn't take much longer than a 25% water change and is a nice way to be sure the water parameters are not getting too out of whack. Topping up (only water evaporates, all the crud and toxins are still in the water) IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

HTH
I never had to do anything like this with any of my freshwater tanks. Once every couple of months I'd do a pretty big water change but that's about it.

That's about the worst thing you could do to a neglected tank. Congrats.

I feel sorry for your fish.Mad

is anyone else having a problem where the water is becoming cloudy after a few days? I removed all the water from tank, cleaned the gravel again, cleaned decorations, and water became cloudy after about 36 hours. Could it be the water conditioner causing this?

no. you could pour an entire liter into a 29gal tank and it would not go cloudy, it's something else.

do you have fish in it? what are your test results for ammonia and nitrites?

Kind of a creepy video. Thanks for the link, though.
Lol. I was waiting to see a human head start floating up in the aquarium. This is some silence of the lambs meets revenge of the nerds shiznit!

Nice tank though.

no fish in it yet. i need to get a test kit to test the water.

all i did was add gravel, decorations, water, and water conditioner. The water is clear until about 36 hours after. Do you think its the water conditioner?

i meant, if you pour a liter of water conditioner in there it woudln't cloud the water.

is your filter on? did you rinse out the filter cartridge before you put it in use?

you always have to rinse new filter cartridges under the tap to remove loose debris. there are typically crystals in there that will break during shipping and storage creating dusts particles.

you never want to rinse an old filter cartridge, it holds bacteria.

i would guess it's the filter cartridge. I wouldn't worry. i'd start adding cheap fish to the tank to get the cycle started, i'd recommend a bunch of guppies from a local pet store, not the chain stores. they typically sell a dozen for a couple bucks.

if the cloudiness is from organic matter, the cycling of your tank will clear it up and if it's inorganic, the filter will pick it up.

did you check the glass, clean it a couple times? I don't turn my fish tank light on until an hour before sunset, to save power and prevent algae growth.

you're using gravel or sand? where'd you get it from?

could be dust. they don't keep a lid on their gravel and it sits for a pretty long time. did you wash it in a bucket or just a handful at a time under the tap? if it's your gravel, you'll have to take it out and rinse it in a bucket. i'd recommend tossing it and using the bagged pebbles you can find in the garden section of home depot. those wash up easily.
