(NO OT) - DIY: Inexpensive Bracket for Anyone w/Radar Detector, GPS, Scan Tool or Anything Windshield Mounted

10,827 3,722 September 12, 2012 at 01:31 PM in Autos
I wasn't sure where to post this since there is no DIY or How To section on SD but I've posted this 'deal' on many automotive forums that I'm on and it's always been well received. Mods: If there is someplace where this fits better feel free to relocate it there. SD needs a DIY sub-section maybe?

I made a bracket for my radar detector to mount to the rear view mirror rather than the stupid windshield brackets w/suction cups. This same device can be used for a wide variety of things such as GPS devices or engine monitor readouts. The cost is anywhere from free to $2.50 depending on if you ride bicycles or not. It's a simple seat post reflector with the reflector removed. Most have these in their garage and if not you can get them at your local bicycle shop for a few bucks at most. When I went to mine they gave me handfuls of them of various sizes for free just for asking. You will also need a small bolt with a matching washer & nut to attach the factory bracket to it. There are a couple sizes so pick based on the thickness of your mirror stem then use padded tape to make up the difference. Pretty simple actually.

I figured this is a perfect post for those Slickdealers like me who think $90 or even $35 is WAY to much for a simple mirror bracket mount.

Enjoy!

from the pic, the hard part seems to be making the end that attaches to a device. Also, it doesn't seem to be quickly detachable, which might be important for states that don't allow radar detector.
In the instance of the device pictured it's just the bracket that comes with the radar detector. You remove the suction cups and use that portion for the nut/bolt/washer combo. It will vary from device to device but it's assumed that the majority of the people who come across this thread will be using this method for mounting a radar detector as that appears to be the most common use for such a device. They all include some sort of windshield mounting bracket so that is what you will modify for use with this. It might require a little bit of effort but we're talking about a bicycle reflector here taking the place of a $90 mounting bracket. It's understood that there will be a slight amount of fabrication to save quite a bit of money.

I have a bmw 3 series and there isn't much room to fit a mirror radar mount, I see some people use 5/8" clamps and was wondering if they had those as bike, feels like I need to goto a hobby store to build a mount or something

Bumping this up as there's been a few radar detector threads lately and a lot of people talking about Blendmounts costing nearly $100 and even paying $30-$50 for cheap knock-offs on eBay. Seems that this option for about $3 (or less) might be something that SDers would appreciate.

Thanks, OP. I didn't see this thread when it was new. I have some reflectors lying around here somewhere; I'll have to give it a try!

I think a lot of people have missed it in the last two years since it was active. Big Grin

Good thing I don't currently own a Chevy then, right?

(actually, I've had several GM products with this same bracket and no catastrophic failures to speak of Big Grin)

OP.. not sure if have any cycle stores nearby..

is it possible to get the reflector and washer and screw/ or whatever is need...online for cheap?

just saw your post too.. and want to do this with my 9500ix.. the suction cups that came with it.. weared off long time back and I am just placing the detector in cup holders... even though the detector is able to catch the signals.. this top mounting will give it more accurate and quick readings..

TIA

Edit:
Do you think this [amazon.com] will do the job?

Yeah, it looks like it will. If you have a local bike shop it's probably just as cheap or cheaper plus if it doesn't fit you can return/exchange it easily. My local shop just gave me some from a pile he had. It's nice to support your local businesses whenever possible too.

Under the head liner and down the A-piller & into the dash is the most popular route to run it.
