Tire mounting

38,341 5,378 September 24, 2012 at 09:05 AM in Autos
I got in on the DTD deal a couple weeks ago as my car will need new tires by the winter. So now I have 4 tires sitting in my garage waiting to be installed.

I'm looking for a place to mount/balance them and to my surprise, a couple shops have refused. Their excuse is "if we tear it, then we owe you a new tire" .... Uh OK. I understand that some shops could refuse on principle (e.g. they want you to buy the tires from them for profit), but work is work - if it takes a tech 1 hour to mount and balance 4 tires and you pay him $20 and charge $100 - that's $80 in your pocket. I'm also looking for a 4 wheel alignment, which is pure profit. I can understand perhaps turning down this business when your shop is packed (better to sell tires at a profit, too), but why do it when you're not busy?

Has anyone seen this excuse before?

I thought that if you sold motor oil, you are forced by law to take back used motor oil. Maybe that is state-specific?
Ive heard that but most grocery stores sell oil, I get a pretty crazy look if I brought oil back to the grocery store.

I guess, but I have brought mine into the customer service/returns desk at Walmart. I didn't think about the grocery store. I might have to ask them if they take it back!

Walmart does have a auto department though, and most have oil change bays. Try CVS Im sure they may give you a priceless look.

you kidding? most M&P shops around here will take waste oil from you off the street - you don't need to have them change it - because it's free heat for them!

Our Township Building for Repairing vehicles, has a sign out front - "Wanted Used Motor Oil" - they too use it for fueling an oil burner in their shop. It's not just M&P Shops; it's anyone that has a shop and has a converted burner for burning used motor oil for fuel purposes. Many people do this, not just shops bulb

7-11's - Wawa's - Target - Walgreen's - Big Lot's - Dollar Stores - I'm sure they will all be thrilled to take back your "used motor oil" Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

On a zombie apocalypse show, (ok, fine, it's a "prepper" survival show), a guy converted a big-ass, ex-military truck to run on oil. He would drive to places that wanted to get rid of waste oil and fill up his tanks for free. Pretty sweet. I'm currently working on a similar thing so I have a use for all this free-after-rebate oil from Advance Auto. Wink

Shops will dispose of your old oil, as many shops use your old oil to heat their shops with an oil burner that they have running, using the old oil as a source of "fuel".

Prices for tires may vary by volume on where your purchase them; and depending on the size of the Shop; depends on the discount you get when you purchase them. Same goes for any type of business when they purchase supplies at any business; they are given a discount based on their "volume" at that particular business, is the norm.

Alaska and Hawaii have higher shipping costs to move product to both of these states - therefore, the cost of purchasing items there is higher. Having been to Hawaii, we priced out items there; it is higher there for almost everything. I would suspect that the cost of goods in Alaska is the same. From what my son tells me, he has a friend who works both in Alaska and in Michigan; and he flys back to Alaska goods from Michigan, as it is cheaper to do so; than purchasing said items in Alaska. Tell me that prices in Alaska are the same as in Nevada or other states.
We just went to 3 shops in town (Nevada) that wanted MORE for the same tires than what we could have gotten them in Alaska for. Until you have lived in Alaska don't try to tell me about prices there, BTDT for YEARS. Hawaii and Alaska aren't even the same as in Alaska things can be trucked in or barged for cheaper than to Hawaii. I also pay more for milk, salmon (not that I'd eat that nasty Atlantic farmed crap), corned beef, and lots of other things than in Alaska. Stop trying to lecture people on how they are "wrong" when you have no clue.

They will take it for free but in winter when I don't feel like getting under the truck I pay them to do it. In summer when I/we change it I just see what friends are storing it or bring it to a local shop.

I think I remember seeing that laugh out loud and it was pretty sweet, if I remember it correctly, and all he needs to do is get used oil from places to keep it running bounce

I'm not lecturing you, you took it that way. It was my understanding that things cost more in both States due to shipping costs, and from people that I'm aware of that live there, and from my self visiting Hawaii, and knowing people that live there in particular. In fact, I asked you question, regarding if prices were different between Alaska and Nevada, did I not? Don't be so defensive, sheesh.

I don't know why tires would cost more in Nevada, since in Nevada, Companies are able to Warehouse there "tax free" - as it is the most friendly environment for setting up Warehouse Distribution; unless this has changed recently.

King crab in season is usually ~ $7/pound at the grocery stores in Alaska. I used to have a hookup with some pilots who would bring me some from Dutch Harbor when they flew in.bounce

The simple fact is I was stating MY experience and you decide to always butt in as a know it all when and try to prove people wrong. I really don't care why things cost more it this shitty state. I really don't care about your "knowledge", I care more about how you were taken off my ignore list.

lol, yesterday I caught some goofy "house hunting" reality show where people check out different houses with their realtor and then at the end of the show they tell you what house they bought.

They were in Nevada, and the guy kept complaining how none of the backyards had any grass; that they were just rocks and dirt. Hello! You're In a Desert! laugh out loud

Really, though, lawn care is a lot easier when you don't have to cut any grass. Because it doesn't exist.

The no grass I can deal with, but there is no weather other than still and hot. Yesterday it got up to 100, in freaking OCTOBER. I grew up in Michigan but consider Alaska home so it's just unnatural to me for it to be hot this late in the year.

Wow, such negativity coming from someone that we used to discuss a lot of topics together in the past. WTF happened here Confused Never realized I was on your ignore list; pardon me; and I don't have the power to take myself off of it - only you do. Bad day or two? Your experience in Alaska outranks my comments, okay bounce
