Tablet for a 9 year old?

572 239 September 30, 2012 at 10:59 AM
I'm not sure where to post this...so I hope I chose the correct forum. I am looking to get my son a tablet for Christmas. The thing is I have no idea at what tablet to even start looking at. I would like it to be below $300.00. He will use it mainly for playing games and watching tv or movies. I would like to be able to download a lot of movies so we can get rid of the old portable dvd player and dvd case when taking long car trips.

Essentially I want it to replace the whole DVD issue as they are a hassle in the car and keep him from always draining my battery on my Evo. We don't need to download books as we have a kindle.

If it could stream netflix that would be great too.

I appreciate any suggestions....I have been looking at the google nexus tablet but am not sure if it's the best tablet for my son as I want to download a lot of movies.

I wish I never clicked this thread, I kinda want to order one of these now...but don't need it. I have way too many computers/tablets/smartphones. Hmmmm...would make a neat gift though.

Why so cheap, is there something I'm missing? Scratchhead

I got a Dell Streak7 for my DD (3 yo) about 9 months ago. I got it to replace an in-car DVD player (which sucks when you have to change discs every 2 hours), ahead of a series of plane trips, to keep her busy. I can put about 15 movies and a TON of TV shows on it with a 32GB SD card; the apps for kids are great too. I got it for about $115.

I felt bad for not taking this thread seriously so I wanted to make an effort to make up for my first suggestion. This time I think I have found the perfect tablet to keep a kid quiet on long car trips.

These tablets are easier to get your hands on...

The whole time I was reading your post I was thinking a Google Nexus. It really is a fantastic tablet at am amazing price point, and I would think it would be perfect for small hands. There's no denying that an iPad would be better for smaller hands though. An iPad 1 can be found for below that price point and using computer programs like Handbrake, it's easy to rip DVDs to a compatible format. iPad definitely can play movies- either bought from the iTunes store or ripped from disks with Handbrake or saved from Youtube with Keep It.

now your sense of humor is coming back that is what we like to see around here. sorry about your troubles though.
ps i am not that bad either.

Ya it seems no matter how mad I get in life I can't seem to stay mad for longer than 10 minutes. I guess I was just frustrated cause I really want to get him a tablet to make a shitty situation better and felt like I was being judged/looked down upon for something that others really had no idea of.

No worries though! I got some great suggestions! I was gonna grab the matrix but it's OOS. So I will be keeping my eye out for other Matrix deals or possible Kindle Fire and the google Nexus. I think the Ipad is just too much money now....since seeing this deal my budget has dropped from $300.00 to $200.00 or under just because there is no point spending that much if I can get something that meets are needs for under $200.00.

Now I'm just gonna search to see if they all offer car charges since probably 99% of usage will be in the car.

This one is $60 through today. http://mtxone.com/products/matrixone

At that price, my 7 and 9 yr old boys will each have one for Christmas! It'll run apps from the Android App Store and from Google Play.
Thanks. Got one. No idea why.

Nothing personal, it's just what we do Big Grin

It is our initiation process to weed out the undesirables. I wasn't sure how this one was going to turn out, but you seem to have passed the test.

It was tempting at that price. I gave it some thought and couldn't some up with anything I would really use it for and figured it would just turn out to be one of those silly impulse purchases that I ended up regretting later. I'm sure it would be money better spent elsewhere.

So uh, yeah. I'm in for one as well.
