Tablet for a 9 year old?

I'm not sure where to post this...so I hope I chose the correct forum. I am looking to get my son a tablet for Christmas. The thing is I have no idea at what tablet to even start looking at. I would like it to be below $300.00. He will use it mainly for playing games and watching tv or movies. I would like to be able to download a lot of movies so we can get rid of the old portable dvd player and dvd case when taking long car trips.
Essentially I want it to replace the whole DVD issue as they are a hassle in the car and keep him from always draining my battery on my Evo. We don't need to download books as we have a kindle.
If it could stream netflix that would be great too.
I appreciate any suggestions....I have been looking at the google nexus tablet but am not sure if it's the best tablet for my son as I want to download a lot of movies.

So uh, yeah. I'm in for one as well.
PS is it sad I'm ordering a tablet from my tablet ?
But anyways, do you mean just an android tablet in general?
I use mine at night and in the mornings for reading news and stuff. I surf SD and Facebook. Check my emails ( which is cool because I can have all my email addys logged in at the same time and just click each one. Makes it easier for multiples. ) I use weather Widgets, alarm clocks, sticky notes, calculator, torrents. I use it as an e-reader, a cookbook, a music player. Also soooooo many fun apps. I get bored of most the game apps quickly though.
kindergartners in some states are using ipads as a learning tool. gotta get with the times.
i know several..not one or two but several 3 year olds with hp touchpads. with all the learning apps out there, it's only beneficial to get with the times.

Guess I was undesirable...but this tablet looks like a good buy for my 9 year old daughter! She wanted an ipod touch (like older sister and brother) but this might be better.

Oh...and OP...thanks for creating this thread. I kind of had the same question and now I have some options!
I just don't judge people cause you never know what they're going through and it is my pet peeve when people do.
You'll find lots of sub $100 tablets - most have similar specs:

Honestly that Matrix doesn't sound too bad - similar to what you are going to get from the Chinese wholesalers, but from a US company.
I won't judge - my 9 year old has a tablet - Archos 10"
Have also had good experience with the 8" Archos from Staples (can't say current price is a good deal):

Mine are currently used for the same purposes you have described - entertainment for long car rides. With 2 kids, the dual DVD players became a pain - cables, mounting, AC adapters - starting and stopping and having DVD reset, reaching back and forth to switch discs, etc.
I've found it much easier to convert DVDs and copy to SD cards and then have a collection at the ready. When they are tired of watching movies they can read a book, play Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Where's my water, etc.
So uh, yeah. I'm in for one as well.
They sure were quick to charge the money to my card. I hope they actually do ship these as promised.

Also Ipad 1 if you can find one.
And finally Ipad mini coming out for $329.
I know the mini might be more but I do love the ipad for its ease of use.
