Lounge Doctors. **UPDATE** surgery is complete.

My husband has been having trouble keeping food down for months now. He has dropped below 130 pound now. His Gastroenterologist scoped both ends last month and ran a bunch of other test with no findings. So today we went in for a ultrasound on his tummy. We have not heard anything from his Doctor yet. I was looking over the technicians shoulder as she wrote her notes. She wrote that he appears to have a occlusion in his SMA.

I googled it and came back with Occluded Superior Mesenteric Artery Has anyone ever heard of this. It sounds like the cure is some sort of surgery to fix it. Tell me I'm wrong. Pray

In all seriousness I'm trying to read up on what you posted and it sounds like others are right - they'd admit him immediately if it were that. Maybe it was just a guess the tech was going to share with the people who actually interpret the scans. Trying to win brownie points or required to come up with something to contribute.

I have not been told anything yet. I was peeking over the ultrasound tech shoulder and being noisy. If it is what she believes it is(and from the symptoms seem to match his) the artery must not be severely blocked at this time or they would have rushed him right in. The Xray tech has to read it and inform the Gastroenterologist of his findings. Then if it is a artery is blocked then the Gastroenterologist has to talk to the heart doctor.

In some ways it would be ok if it was a small blockage and could be treated non surgically. Other wise we still have no clue why he is having so many issues keeping food down.

With husbands heart attacks last year and his COPD the big drop in his weight is scary. He is not a healthy man and I'm just a big mother hen, I guess. Frown

UPDATE!

It turns out that the info that I had seen the ultrasound Tech log on the screen indicating DH could have a Occluded SMA was correct. So he has a Occluded Superior Mesenteric Artery (blockage in his small intestine, if I'm correct)

Next step is a consult with a Vascular surgeon. Most likely he will need a stent to open the artery back up. Should have a date for that by the end of the day. :fingerscrossed:

Good news is now we know why he is so sick and down below 130 pounds. We should be able to get him fixed and back to normal. well normal for him anyway. Smilie

I'll keep my SD friend up to date. Thanks my dear E-Friends for letting me come in here and vent a little! Blowkiss

That was what I was thinking. He had some stents put in last year when he had his heart attack so I know what it expect.

I'm glad you know what is what. Now if you do not have a date with a Vascular Surgeon by the end of business today - get the fark on the phone with your Doctor and start raising hell like a nice not so nice lady would who is overly concerned that her husband might die from malnutrition, and that fact that he is a mirage of other health issues Ranting

I'm sorry, but it's Thursday, and you just got this news yesterday or this morning; and this test was done almost a week ago; this Doctor dropped the ball and you darn well know it.

Yes, I get to yell at you for not calling or going for the test results on MONDAY - and not listening to your husband who was too ill to deal with this. Now listen here "Missy Cupcake" - take it into your hands and deal with these Doctor's - don't expect an ill man to deal with it - it's too much for him.

Now for the Comfort hug Grouphug Hug2 and all that mushy stuff you deserve heart
