My husband has been having trouble keeping food down for months now. He has dropped below 130 pound now. His Gastroenterologist scoped both ends last month and ran a bunch of other test with no findings. So today we went in for a ultrasound on his tummy. We have not heard anything from his Doctor yet. I was looking over the technicians shoulder as she wrote her notes. She wrote that he appears to have a occlusion in his SMA.
I googled it and came back with Occluded Superior Mesenteric Artery Has anyone ever heard of this. It sounds like the cure is some sort of surgery to fix it. Tell me I'm wrong.

It turns out that the info that I had seen the ultrasound Tech log on the screen indicating DH could have a Occluded SMA was correct. So he has a Occluded Superior Mesenteric Artery (blockage in his small intestine, if I'm correct)
Next step is a consult with a Vascular surgeon. Most likely he will need a stent to open the artery back up. Should have a date for that by the end of the day. :fingerscrossed:
Good news is now we know why he is so sick and down below 130 pounds. We should be able to get him fixed and back to normal. well normal for him anyway.
I'll keep my SD friend up to date. Thanks my dear E-Friends for letting me come in here and vent a little!
I just hope he doesn't lose much more weight this week. Not sure if they will have to cut or maybe they can do something non-surgical
Whatever they tell him Thursday it needs to happen fast. I'm not sure if he is keeping enough food down to live on at this point.

Years ago I had problems eating anything. Literally in the course of two weeks my appetite disappeared and everything I ate caused extreme pain. But it wasn't the pain or the 50 pounds I lost out of nowhere that landed me in the hospital. It was the fact that out of nowhere I went into SVT (extremely high and erratic heart rate) that caused me to get into the hospital. (They never did figure out what was wrong with me, tossed lots of different medicines at the problem, but it slowly got better and now sits at a manageable state.)
Not sure what he can hold down, but perhaps try a drink that's designed for people that aren't getting proper nutrition? All I can think of is Ensure at the moment... sorry.
Good luck! He should turn out fine with the proper care!

I took him to the AF base with me this weekend. I would have left him at home but if I don't force him to try to eat he will not even try. All he does is sleep.
Glad he has an appointment; though if you feel it's life threatening for him at any time prior to this; take him directly to the ER - don't even hesitate - you already know what is wrong
You might try making some Gatorade Popsicles to try to keep his electrolytes up. Something cool and refreshing might be easier for him to tolerate.
I will keep

I really like that idea for the electrolytes.
