Lounge Doctors. **UPDATE** surgery is complete.

My husband has been having trouble keeping food down for months now. He has dropped below 130 pound now. His Gastroenterologist scoped both ends last month and ran a bunch of other test with no findings. So today we went in for a ultrasound on his tummy. We have not heard anything from his Doctor yet. I was looking over the technicians shoulder as she wrote her notes. She wrote that he appears to have a occlusion in his SMA.

I googled it and came back with Occluded Superior Mesenteric Artery Has anyone ever heard of this. It sounds like the cure is some sort of surgery to fix it. Tell me I'm wrong. Pray

In general, doctors prefer not to pile on multiple diagnosis which have different etiologies, even if there are a few similar symptoms/signs. A focused approach is preferred, even in a multi-factorial situation. Celiac is auto-immune and genetically pre-disposed, a "no-wheat for a week or two diet" could help determine that. Crohns does have an increased risk in smokers, however, CCs DH seems like hes dealing with something more acute in onset than Crohns. The weight loss seems more rapid, or at least thats how Im reading it.

Undergoing invasive diagnostic procedures for suspected conditions (which are now much lower on the differential diagnosis) is unecessary when a problem has been found, and needs to be addressed. Although, it is certainly in CCs right to voice all her questions/concerns to the treating surgeons.

I agree with you on not undergoing invasive diagnostic procedures for suspected conditions at this time. We will wait and see if this is going to take care of the issue.

Cupcake here is the info for the FMLA: http://www.dol.gov/whd/fmla/#.UIHsemdMdeA

I haven't had a moment to read through it all, but maybe you can take a look at it and see if your hubby is eligible for this, I would think so, considering the circumstances - it's worth a try hug

I feel like my husbands health is not to good, but I guess the situation is not yet super "critical". If it were to go on like this much longer, the lack of nutrition he has been getting would affect his other heath issues like his heart condition, COPD and such.

He is also at the point he will lose his job soon. (yes it is only two days a week at this point, but very much needed income)
sorry your having alot of stress... my job dumped me as soon as they could by law, since I couldn't come back to work after getting hit by a car.

i got hit by a car 5 years ago by a pickup truck that didnt see me while turning into his driveway. was knocked out, busted up....still am. had and still have medical problems because of crushed vertebrae, crushed discs pushing into my spinal cord causing numbness and major pain, shoulder was crushed, still have pain and can sleep on that side, and just had another muscle tear by same shoulder. so now i have to have ANOTHER surgery on 31st to repair the muscle tear in my back-shoulder. SuCKS!
a few times i was thinking about taking myself out because of the pain/cost/being in bed alot, but im still hanging in there for the kids/wife.

good luck to you and your family!
