Interestingly enough, he will NOT be the first person to break the sound barrier while freefalling - http://www.barthworks.com/aviatio...reakup.htm (tl;dr - In 1966, an SR-71 basically exploded at over Mach 3 and one of the people survived, other did not.)
Holy shit that was a crazy story. It would of been funny if the Cowboy flew in and told the pilot he owed him 3 cows and an antelope.

Thanks very much for sharing that story. I am an airplane nut and hearing tales of the SR-71 is good for one's soul.

No problem! I was fascinated by it. Make sure you click all the links at the bottom, too. Nothing as cool as the pilot's tale, but some interesting facts/anecdotes.

So he's at 67,000 feet right now. How high is he going until he jumps?

I'm confused.
The numbers on the top of the screen show ~74,000 ft and it looks like the right number is 22.6 m. I'm assuming this is miles but 74,000 ft != 22 miles.

What do the numbers represent?

one crazy mofo.

live stream on discovery channel too.

number on right is kilometers, left is feet. 10,000 ft is 3.048 km. not sure why they don't have a k on there.

still awhile to wait until ~ 121,000 ft.

bah yeah I was just sitting here realizing that.

. for europeans is , so the number is accurate in meters. It's the 10-base of the metric system that makes for the easy mistaken conversion. Thank God for the idiocy of Imperial units which wouldn't allow for such a mistake laugh out loud
