[S]United[/S] States of America

[I want to preface this by saying this is not meant to be a thread throwing blame at one side or the other...there's an entire different section for that. This is just to get people's feedback on recent news....]

Never thought I'd use the words secession and viral in the same sentence, but that seems to be the trend on Facebook and Twitter over the last few days. It seems as though the government has received petition requests from at least 40 states (different articles report different stats) and over 700,000 people and steadily rising.

I'm just happy to see that people are finally making the progression from backroom murmur and rumblings to now be willing to sternly voice their displeasure with our current system. I don't know that a secession will actually happen, but I do believe that this is a step in the right direction for the people to pave their own futures.

It's actually hard to find results from the larger known media outlets as they don't even seem to be reporting on it.

my wife told me members of our state put out a petition for secession, but this is the first i've actually read about it.

i'm disappointed in members of my state and honestly think the whole thing is rather childish and sad.

How about this instead?

Force the failed States of New York and California to secede from the United States, hence creating a more perfect union [whitehouse.gov]

I guess this discussion does belong in the Lounge after all.

(I never said prison) So I guess the Jews didn't realize how good they had it, up until that final walk to the giant ovens, eh? Point being, that phrase "don't know how good we have it" has always just seemed like a cop out to me. It says, "just be happy with what you got, don't aspire to be anything better, and be thankful it's not worse". If that were the attitude we had about 500 years, ago, we'd all still be sitting in Europe.

I also want to clarify that I highly doubt any state will actually secede. However, the fact that a growing number of people each day are willing to take a stand / direct action gives me a bit of a warm, tingly feeling that some people out there are not content with complacency.

Why is it childish? They're voicing their displeasure with the current state of affairs in our government. Was it childish when in the late 1700s our country decided to stop being a set of colonies and declare independence from England?

Would you mind explaining your reasoning why? I'm not arguing...just asking. My opinion is no more valuable than yours or vice versa...maybe you have a point/reason I haven't considered.

Seriously though...how the fark did we get sooooo far away from the Constitution? I realize things change...that's what Amendments are for.
People get lazy...they don't want to have to think for themselves so it's just easier to have something central to tell them what to do and only focus on two different parties for that central government...

I love this country...it's amazing what we have accomplished. I just don't want us to go back a system like those we ran away from in founding this country.

And yeah, nobody's going to actually secede.

Oh, there's a lot of different ones on there. I saw a few earlier stating something along the lines of "Deport everyone who signed the petition for secession"...and it had like 30,000 signatures...lol. That's okay though. Obviously not everyone is going to agree...but at least there is some communication going around.

That's one of the most important rights we have...being able to complain, discuss, etc.

You missed Godwin's Law by >< much. laugh out loud

I've never said anything about not aspiring to be anything better and just accept the status quo, only that things can always be worse. This secession thing seems like an overreaction to me.

I love this country too. I hope that my various rants don't come across as seeming otherwise. But I love the principles that this country was founded on, not the ones in place today that promotes greed and narcissism at the highest levels through altruism, propaganda, etc. That's not what the majority of Americans stand for, IMO. I cannot under any circumstances, find a system that oppresses those with morals and elevates the liars, cheaters, and thugs, just. Add to that the massive lack of accountability, and you've created an environment where the only possible outcome is evil winning.

It's just so much foot-stomping over the election results after convincing oneself that victory was essentially guaranteed. Maybe don't let the guy who sucks so hard win the primaries next time around?

I know my example was extreme, but it was for emphasis. And I had not heard of Godwin's Law until this conversation...so now I've learned something new...that I otherwise would not have if I didn't start this thread.

How do you figure? Based on your history, I'm assuming you're thinking of Occupy?

Dear Obama, If Texas Secedes, Can We Stay With You? [austinchronicle.com]
New petition asks White House to make Austin 50th state

laugh out loud

Quote :
Austin Texas continues to suffer difficulties stemming from the lack of civil, religious, and political freedoms imposed upon the city by less liberally minded Texans. It is entirely feasible for Austin to operate as its own state, within the United States, in the event that Texas is successful in the current bid to secede. It is important for Austin to remain in the union as to do so would protect its citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers.
We would also like to annex Dublin Texas, Lockhart Texas, & Shiner Texas.
