Mine was a cheap one & I have it for years. As long as you use it properly, you'll be fine with a cheaper one. This http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Be...03&sr=1-10 looks like a good one for a great price. This http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=s9_dn...d_i=289929 type of mixer needs to be a good, expensive one. The cheap ones don't mix the batter well. The beaters don't cover the entire bowl. You end up paying for a bowl, because it's useless as a mixer.

ETA: I included the links, because I didn't know if you were wanting a hand mixer like in the link or one that looks more like a hand blender. I've never used the one that's like a hand blender & can't offer an opinion on those.

Just my personal experience with handheld mixers vs. kitchen aid stand mixer.

Handheld mixers make a flipping mess. A real huge pain in the butt mess. I used to like to bake when I was a kid, but that, coupled with the fact that I always had to clean up a mess made me bake less and less and less. Yes, I had a deep bowl, but it just wasn't enough. Yes, I tried to block the sprays with a paper towel, but it seemed like much of the ingredients were wasted flying out.

Then the Kitchen Aid stand mixer transformed my life. I've been a lot happier about baking and do it a lot more. Clean up is super easy. I can turn it on and walk away to prepare the baking pan, etc...and I don't have to worry about losing ingredients or cleaning up stuff that flew everywhere. I can make huge batches. Like 7-9 cups of flour huge. Saves time, saves grief.
Also, the consistency of the cake is SOOO much better with the stand mixer. Everything just mixes so much better. Things are fluffier, softer, and just overall better tasting. It makes baking a joy. I've baked the things I've given up on before by using the stand mixer and it's just fantastic.

I personally think that for the ~$70 difference, it's worth it to get a Kitchen Aid stand mixer.

i don't think so... i don't have the kitchenaid handheld anymore so i dont remember just how good it is (i lost it in a breakup ) but i used a non-kitchenaid handheld my whole life growing up and it never failed on me. i'm not sure if you really need a kitchenaid brand handheld.

Thinking of repeating this deal, and also getting MIL flowers, but since I am in the same state as her (2 miles away) going to first check out local flower shops, might find more varied or custom arrangements... that and the fact that MIL LOVES when she gets gifts from mom and pop shops..

I always look for arrangements online, then call the local florist to order my MIL's flowers. I usually order a more customized arrangement using the online arrangement as a example to start with. I can usually get it as cheap or cheaper, even if I ask for more expensive flowers to be added. If I stick with exactly what they have online, they charge the online price. She lives in a small town, so that may not work where you live. It's worth a try though. Also, it seems like they do better work, when you speak to the shop personally. That's the reason I started calling directly, even though I hate talking on the phone. If your DBF isn't totally opposed to the idea, he could try once to see how it goes. If he's hesitant, let him keep doing things his way. At least, you're getting flowers regularly.

Yeah - I like them a lot too and I hardly wear them for those exact reasons!

1) Leave for Auto maintenance appt, road is shut down for brush fire, must take extra 25 min route.
2) route has road construction, hello dirt truck traveling at 25mph
3) at auto shop, "regular maintenance" turns into "OMG, everything is leaking and broken - you might just want to trade it in" (It's about $5k in repairs) Possibly only needs half of that.
4) They comp me a rental car and after driving it home, I realize it is on EMPTY and have to fill it up! and that they notated that on the rental agreement (WTF?)
5) eBay's been farking up the calculated shipping on my listings - telling people it is free and then when they pay, charge them $16?! At least one is threatening to open a case
