i think citrus was giving you the definition of the word. i am seeing the same explanation when i look it up - masala is the dry spice mix that can be added to curry.

a popular dish is chicken tikka masala, which is a saucey stew like you mentioned. i guess it's made with tandoori chicken masala, which is chicken made with masala spices. i'm not sure if that helps.

IME tikka masalas are sweeter than curries. i also like korma - that's made with a little bit of yogurt i think.

if you like spinach, you should order something with saag. that's my favorite indian dish... anything with it - i love that green mush! plus, i like to tell myself that it's healthier since it's made with veggies. laugh out loud

anyway to answer your question, it should taste similar if not the same if you order the lamb curry. but perhaps your lamb was cooked with masala spices - the lamb curry meat may not have been. it's hard to say without seeing the actual menus to compare (and even then - i am by no means an expert in indian food - i just enjoy eating it).
