Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

I've always wanted to go on an Alaska cruise, but I have heard so many complaints about the cruise ships being full of nothing but old people, and that it was pretty boring on the ship.
Yeah, Alaska cruises skew much older, even on Carnival. We'll still try one at some point. The northeast US/Canada cruise we went on was a much older group than our Caribbean cruises.

After all, cruises are supposed to be for the newly wed and the nearly dead. Big Grin

Yeah, the most recent cruise my parents went on was Canada/U.S. East Coast, and it was an older crowd than they've typically seen on the Caribbean cruises too.

When is your wedding, what month?
Not sure... We just know we want it to be this year - late summer or early fall. I'm up for taking a honeymoon a couple months after the wedding to avoid hurricane season if we can. Ugh - hurricane season just eats up so much of the good vacationing times of the year!

So you don't have anything planned yet? You must be doing Vegas or getting married by a JP then.

Not that you asked but in case you want an alternative to a cruise, September is a great time of the year to go somewhere in Europe, the UK, or Ireland. It's after the summer holidays, and all the kids are back in school so there are less lines at all the museums, historical sites, etc. It's a lot cheaper to go then, since it's the off season yet the weather in September is really nice.

so isn't going on a cruise considered a right of passage to becoming a senior citizen?

Because doing a transfer at sea is very dangerous.

I hate flying already because I am supposed to trust a likely drunk pilot. The thought of getting on a ship for days and with my luck running into an absolutely obnoxious person the first of the trip that will not leave me alone the rest of the trip has so far deterred me from considering cruises anything other than torture. Embarrassment
But it's easier to push the obnoxious person overboard on a ship than on a plane. laugh out loud

I would probably be this way if this was how my first cruise went. But obviously this is a very rare situation, so I wouldn't hesitate to go on another, having been on several in the past.

Courtesy of watching The Deadliest Catch... That would require another very large ship to get close enough to make a safe transfer. Even in calm seas it can be dangerous. Your ship can drift into the other ship.

That said... OTOH there is no excuse to not put everyone in lifeboats and evacuate while requesting that other ships nearby come to pick up passengers. The conditions certainly warrant this.

Similar issues. They can only carry a few people at a time and airlifting people isn't easy as the wind can smash the basket into the side of the ship.

Carnival will go bankrupt over this [Y] [N]?

Or Coast Guard helicopters?
There are 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members. That would be A LOT of helicopter trips.

I think someone said the stabilizers were out on the cruise ship. If that's the case, then I would think it would be even harder to get another ship to come up and be able to safely transfer people from one to the other...

Well, we just got engaged a month and a half ago - so we haven't been planning for long. I wouldn't mind Vegas Smilie But I think I might go for something on the beach in Florida, if I can get it to work. So hopefully doing something like that won't take a lot of time planning ahead...

Ohh I would love to go to Ireland! It looks so beautiful! It's been a while since I've had a good trip to a beach, so I'm really wanting to that though... Maybe Hawaii Whee

Why don't they have on-board catapults to launch people onto an awaiting pillow barge?

It would be a bloody mess.

Quote from PaintTheSkyGrey :
It does seem that a period on a cruise might put a damper on the fun. But I think they make apps to track them, so you should really be able to somewhat predict and plan around them.
Who cares? You dont have to change the bedding. Just be careful seamen and blood is like cement when mixed with sheets.
