Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

High Five you and me both - I ain't going on a cruise for exactly that reason.

My first flight to the USA was a great welcome to the country Wink. On the transatlantic part of the flight, the passenger next to me kept throwing up the whole time vomit, then in the DFW airport, some upset husband started shooting at his estranged wife - welcome to the USA wave

I'm just wondering what's worse, this, or the people that have gotten stuck in airplanes on the taxiway for 8 hours because they couldn't take off because of snow(?). I think I'd rather crap in a bag in private than in a tiny airplane toilet that everyone else has done the same in, and with a line of people waiting to get in. Of course, people do so on longer flights as well, but they know ahead of time.

I've been on a couple Carnival cruises, including the Triumph, and a RCCL cruise. Both had good food, good customer service, etc. RCCL maybe *slightly* better food/CS, but not sure it was worth the extra money. Carnival had better entertainment. Just like their slogan, Carnival was more fun. Norwegian is similar to both these. Celebrity and Princess are a step above. I'm booked on Princess (Carnival owned).

I'm no expert but I doubt there is anything more Carnival could have done and I think any cruise line would have handled it the same way. And they are offering reimbursement for the cruise fare and any money spent onboard (except casino), discount on a future cruise, paying for hotels in New Orleans, paying for their travel home, and $500.

Remember, this rarely happens, and you're much more likely to die in the car on the way to the cruise port, and probably more likely to die in an airplane. At least Carnival did contain the fire. True fact: the biggest risk to a cruise ship is fire (not running aground). And many fires are caused by passengers tossing cigarettes overboard and they get blown back in.

What boat?
I think it's awful they're putting these poor people on buses. Mobile does have an airport. They are taking the cheap way out, and the customers should be treated better. Just my opinion, and I realize I'm a little prissy, but I doubt any of the carnival executives would get on a bus after this cruise from hell. I just think after all that to put these people on a bus is horrible.

I can only imagine the odor on the bus with a bunch of unwashed people that have potential vomit and other "stuff" all over them and now can look forward to a bus ride of several hours. Better leave the windows open or you will have some more vomit, but at any case you will certainly plenty of Mad people on the bus.

It would be gross. I feel for them and I think carnival is thinking about their $$ rather than the people's comfort. Maybe the executives should ride the buses with their customers.

First thing on my mind would be getting a hot shower. Then I'd want to eat and rest, and finally go home.

Plane would be a better gesture, but there are some people (like me) that would prefer a bus to plane. They should be given the option.
I did hear on the news tonight that many of the passengers were making other arrangements on their own.

CNN is having wall to wall coverage of this thing, and apparently there's going to be a special on it tomorrow night.

I don't get the fascination with this.

It's a Piers Morgan is hosting the special tomorrow night, so it's sure to be full of drama and hyperbole.

I dunno... news helicopter showed some pretty happy folks on the upper deck.

Is this one of those things where all the news is dismal for a non-event?

I wonder if and how the end of the cruise staff tipping was addressed. I'd like to think that I would tip. A full refund, credit for future cruise, $500, and transportation to be able to return home. In addition, although the passengers shouldn't have wrote messages on bed sheets and towels as banners for the media or wore ship provided bath robes off the ship, I hope Carnival doesn't audit them.

We're so civilized and haven't had to live like pirates on ships for like a really long time and all. The idea of going without food and sanitation. Oh my!

Carnival has had a poor couple of years. I'm suprised I haven't heard more about last years disaster more. They must have friends in the big media.
