Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

What happened at Applebee's? I have not been to one in a good 4-5 yrs. I would say, been to Red Lobster and Outback a couple times here and there, and Olive Garden but not the others.
It could have just been the location Dontknow I hadn't been to that one in particular in years. But I ordered the chicken penne something-something. The chicken looked extremely overcooked, and was very very tiny little "slices". There was a random french fry mixed in with the pasta. Half of it was cold. I couldn't eat it. The waiter never seemed to notice or care. I think there was something else wrong with it too, but after I nearly gagged trying to get a bite down, I tried to just forget about it and be done with it.

Should have had pizza that night anyway. I think that's what I really wanted. Or maybe I should have just stuck with the Oriental Chicken Salad. That's always pretty good yummy

I have been to a couple places like that, kind of like this Italian place called Rostini's nearby me, all my friend rave about it being great an all... but every time I have went their pizza has been burnt on the bottom and the pasta is always undercooked... The thing I hate the worst about pasta is being undercooked where it is very chewy. I would take overcooked over undercooked. But yea, I can understand.

I don't really remember. I've only been on one and it was forever ago. I just remember the food wasn't that great. Lobster especially stands out because I'm really picky about my seafood.
So you've only been on one cruise, and it was years ago, and you don't really remember it, but everyone is supposed to believe you when you say the food sucks? Was it even on Carnival? Things have changed over the years, mainly for the better, on all major cruise lines. I've been on Carnival cruises recently, as well as Royal Caribbean, and the Carnival food was very good, nearly the same as RCCL. The lobster was just as good as any other I've had from nice restaurants; in fact good enough that I ate three lobster tails each night of lobster night.

I'm not really a newb, to this forum (only to posting here) or cruising. Actually if anyone's a newb, it's you, to cruising.

Our room stewards on Carnival have been great - on RCI and NCL, they hardly talked with us. The dining room staff has been great on just about all of our cruises. We had an awesome bartender on one cruise - wife discovered martinis on that cruise. laugh out loud
I had the exact same experience, although just between Carnival and RCI (I've never been on NCL), and have been on more than one Carnival cruise.

We've been on 4 Carnival, 2 RCI, and 1 NCL cruise. Last one was on RCI, and we decided that Carnival was a better fit for us - a bit younger/livelier group (though not excessively so), no live bands on RCI (at least our two RCI cruises), food just as good on Carnival. Since we've only been on NCL once, at it was their oldest ship (no longer in the fleet), I won't judge them on that one experience - which was probably the least enjoyable of our cruises.

If I remember correctly, I went on the Norwegian Star in 2003. The overall cruise was great, but there were things about it that I absolutely couldn't stand, and definitely preferred Carnival over NCL for that.

A couple years later or so, we went on the Norwegian Jewel, and it was perfect. The issues I had on the previous NCL cruise weren't issues on this one at all. My parents went on another NCL cruise this year, and it sounded like my mom's favorite so far. So it seems like NCL is trying to improve each time we've cruised with them. Smilie

Depends on what level you are - linly [carnival.com]
We're "Gold," which is for 25-74 nights sailed. We'll get one free drink coupon, a party with free drinks/appetizers, and a lovely pin. Smilie

I think there are some unposted discounts at "milestones" (50th, 75th, 100th etc cruise). Carnival Corp shareholders get $100 onboard credit each cruise if you own 100 or more shares.

I tend to agree. The RCI ship I was on (Voyager) was nice but was slightly more boring at times (but I still enjoyed it). The "broadway" type shows on RCI weren't nearly as good as on Carnival. The kids we talked on on RCI didn't seem extremely happy. When we were on the elevator with kids, we always asked if they were enjoying the kids club, and most said it was "OK". We looked around their club and it didn't look too fun. On Carnival, we couldn't drag our kid out of the kids club. The comedians on Carnival were awesome, especially the R rated ones. And there would be a comedian performing in the comedy club while another show was going on in the main auditorium. I think RCI just had all performers in the main auditorium. There was a live singer on the RCI cruise, but he wasn't very entertaining to me so we left halfway through it. He (Domenick Allen) was advertising as being a former member of Foreigner, which I'm a fan of (have seen live a few times), so it should have been up my alley. But I'd never heard of him, and he's not even listed on wikipedia's Foreigner page.

We recently almost booked a cruise on NCL's Epic (larger than RCI's Freedom class) or the Jewel, but they didn't work out. We're booked on the Sapphire Princess.

I'm trying to figure out why some people who have commented in this thread had a good experience with Carnival Cruises, yet others had a bad experience with Carnival. The Carnival trips you've been on, were they all a week long or did you do some shorter and therefore cheaper trips as well? The one I was on was a four day, 8 hours in one port cruise.

This isn't unique to Carnival - you'll see people who loved or hated their cruises on other lines as well. IMO, a lot has to do with what you expect. We didn't expect 4 or 5 star food, so we've generally been satisfied (and the specialty, extra fee restaurants are way better). We were blown away buy the personal service - from the room stewards and most of the dining staff. I've been impressed with some of the shows - but Carnival would call them "Vegas-style," which is a joke. The "production" shows are hit or miss - some of the singing and dancing is quite good, some is hard to watch. Some comedy or other entertainment is quite good, some not so much.

Ours have all been 7 or 8 days. The shorter (3-5 days) offer a different experience I've heard - more of a party atmosphere I guess.

For me the boat got real boring real fast, the food was not what I'm used to eating, the room was way smaller than I'm used to , and you spend too much time coming and going and not enough time in port.

I guess that's the difference then. This was a work thing and they went cheap on the cruise. It definitely had that party atmosphere for the adults (saw a lot of drunks and one brawl) and the kids who were on board were allowed to run wild with no parental supervision. There weren't any extra fee restaurants at all, just one bar, a tiny casino, one gift shop, an overpriced spa and one really bad show for the entire trip.

Yet Carnival has the largest standard cabins of any mass-market cruiseline IIRC. And all the mass-market lines spend about the same amount of time in port. And the food quality is about the same on all the mass-market lines. Carnival has more entertainment IMO than the other mass-market lines - though quite a bit of it is quite cheesy. You should try a luxury line - though then you might be talking $5k-$10k for a week vs. $2k on Carnival.

Yeah, the shorter cruises typically get the smaller, older ships.
I've never seen any fights and anybody falling-down drunk on our cruises - partly due to the fact that I don't carry a mirror with me Wink
