Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

For me the boat got real boring real fast, the food was not what I'm used to eating, the room was way smaller than I'm used to , and you spend too much time coming and going and not enough time in port.
Yeah, I'm claustrophobic so having a small inside cabin with no window didn't help matters any. I'd rather fly to the destination and spend more time there, rather than being stuck on a boat watching nothing but water for three of the four days. I took a book to read but the deck area was so noisy with all the kids and drunk (or just rude) adults, that I couldn't focus on the book.

Yet Carnival has the largest standard cabins of any mass-market cruiseline IIRC. And all the mass-market lines spend about the same amount of time in port. And the food quality is about the same on all the mass-market lines. Carnival has more entertainment IMO than the other mass-market lines - though quite a bit of it is quite cheesy. You should try a luxury line - though then you might be talking $5k-$10k for a week vs. $2k on Carnival.

Yeah, the shorter cruises typically get the smaller, older ships.
I've never seen any fights and anybody falling-down drunk on our cruises - partly due to the fact that I don't carry a mirror with me Wink
I thought the shows were cheesy. We went to a couple and the gave up on them!

Wife is claustrophobic, so we have to have at least an oceanview...about half of our cruises have also been in balcony cabins.

Our main goal of cruising is to visit numerous places to see where we might want to spend more time later. That led us to spending a week in the Cayman Islands after a cruise a year or so earlier. I think it's a great way to get a taste of different locations.

I agree that many (most?) are...but that's the same on RCI, NCL, etc. Our cruise in July has several different comedians (four I think), with two shows per night IIRC - one family and one adult. Though I guess they get really crowded.

It is an economical way to see different locations. I just don't feel that I spent enough time in port to really get a feel for the location anyways. I need a few days at least!

I just think that it all varies all the time, even within the same cruise line.

Like the NCL Star - they had arts and crafts every day, and we went to almost every one of them. I really appreciated that! But it might have been the highlight of that ship (the ports were the main highlight of the trip, of course).

I know even though my mom enjoyed her last NCL cruise this year, she said she definitely likes the entertainment and shows on Carnival more. She said she would get bored at night on the NCL cruise, and didn't on Carnival in the past.

And when I went on the Carnival Triumph I didn't have nearly the same experience as these folks did Faint It was one of my favorite cruises! The cruise director [at the time] was the best I've seen on a ship yet.

Iagree Or at least one full day. We were told we'd have 8 hours in port, that was a laugh! We arrived late, there were long lines to get off the ship, even though we were docked at a pier. Then the lines to get back on were really slow, we'd been warned about this so knew to come back in plenty of time. So we actually had about 5 1/2 or six hours on land. We checked out the beach, did some shopping, had lunch, bought some booze, then it was time to go back to the boat. Those who did an activity, like going to the Mayan ruins didn't have time to do anything else.

Overweight british guy? That's John Heald...forgot what his official title is...something like Carnival brand ambassador. I guess he CD's on various ships, not a "pure" CD.

John's the main ambassador for Carnival. Has his own blog.

You'd remember Wee Jimmy. He wears a kilt.

John sounds right. I don't recall anybody on a cruise in a kilt though Smilie
