APC Battery Backup makes loud high pitched noise all of a sudden

This has happened multiple times. I'm watching TV and all of a sudden the APC unit will make this constant, loud, high-pitched noise. Nothing turns off as if the unit failed or something but the noise is unbearable. I turn off my TV and HTPC and then turn off the APC unit for about a minute, turn it back on, and the noise is gone. It isn't really that frequent but has happened at least three times. What is the issue?

Agreed. Look for one by Yuasa or Power Sonic (The APC branded ones are made by whomever APC decides to buy from at any particular time. They may be good, they may not).

Edit: This [ecomelectronics.com]should do nicely. I bought this brand from this company for my 350VA UPS from APC and it has been working great.

Man these batteries are expensive if I have to purchase two. They cost just as much as the unit it seems. Is there a way to bypass the battery and use this unit as just a surge protector somewhere else in the house and get a new UPS to use where this worn out one is?

edit: how long are the warranties? I have to check my records but I think I've had this thing less than two years. That seems kind of quick for the battery to die. Is there a right way and a wrong way to initially charge the battery?

batteries are usually guaranteed for 3 years. the thing is they are going to want you to ship the failed batteries back on your dime or/and pay to ship the new ones. better to just buy replacements or a whole new unit. either way is not cheap.

i pay $17-18 for 7.5Ah APC batteries from ebay - not cheap, but that includes shipping.

I don't think you can get a decent 450VA UPS for even close to $15.

I was going by this person's quote saying I needed two batteries for my one unit.

Well I bought it when I had a relatively small TV (only a 32" LED) so I didn't require a bigger one. Currently I have a 59" TV so it isn't the greatest. It won't sustain power but I just wanted enough juice to turn off my computer safely. The unit gives me over a minute of use I think (I've only had the power go off on my once I think). But if I buy a new unit I will go a little bigger.
