Heading off to College, What do I need?

4,324 1,198 May 7, 2013 at 12:40 PM in Chat
Alright, so this upcoming fall, I will be heading off to college and I have a basic idea of what to take.... I assume some of the people here attended college Smilie and I would like some input on what else I would need.... Here is a basic list of what I plan on taking:

-Desktop
-Laptop
-iPad
-Printer
-10 pairs of shorts/t-shirts
-2 pairs of fancy clothes
-mini fridge
-microwave
-Chair (the one provided by the college looks like a POS)
-futon (maybe)
-pencils/pens/markers/etc....
-Quarters
-Sandals/Flip Folps
-Lamp
-Towels
-Powerbag backpack
-Headphones
-Hot Plate (not sure what for....)
-hangers

I figure if I can have a comprehensive list, I can start buying them as I find deals on them. Iam not really picky on most of the stuff. The ones I care about, I already have (desktop and laptop). The rest is basic.

I remember when I started college one of the first things I did was buy an electric typewriter because it was a lot easier typing papers on that than it was on the old manual typewriter.

shower tote/caddy (unless you have your own private bathroom) -- otherwise you will find all of your stuff gone/pilfered/sabotaged just when you need it.

easy to lug laundry hampers (the pop up style are great -- have at least 2).

mattress pad for your bed (god knows who did what on it since the mattress was last replaced. If you're "privileged" -- spend the money on a mattress topper).

a portable file caddy with hanging folders -- for those few things you want to keep old-school paper style.

If you're in a dorm, somebody else is paying for the heating, cooling and electricity of your place (yes, technically you pay it in the fees, but whether you use 50 kw per month or 5,000 kw, it won't cost you a dime more. Enjoy it while you can....

If I didn't have to pay for heating or cooling, there wouldn't be too many limits on my computing.

Also, what are you majoring in? Do Math or Engineering (seriously).... don't do liberal arts, business (depends), or education. Math, engineering.... the classes will suck and you will have to study more than your peers, but you have to decide if you're there for an education or to party and have fun. If you're there for fun, save the tuition and fees and don't go to college.
I am dual-majoring in Philosophy and Theater Arts and minoring in Journalism. woot

I will spring for a new mattress topper....

Are you implying my selected majoring could result in me not finding any available positions in my desired field and I would have to resort to working at a fast food chain to make ends meet? Shocking..... OMG

I am actually majoring in Finance.

While that is a solid philosophy, I'm not sure that there are many theater jobs involving fries. Maybe something about popcorn kernels would be more appropriate here.

Yeah, I am the moron here.... LMAO

Not sure how much you think I am paying for college.... After the scholarships I just got last week, it is a full ride. Cool Actually, I will be getting paid to go to college. Secondly, you are the one that posted a deal about how urgently you needed to buy a Mac.... why didn't you go to the library instead of wasting $1100+ for a $800 iMac? LMAO

You were the one that was unable to keep it in your pants and buy it off Amazon, imbecile. Once, again my true cost was only $1040ish, not $1200....

My university gave 'free' printing (300 or 400 pages / semester) to a few selected majors. Otherwise they ranged from 5-20cents / page depending on location. I would have said sheet but recently they automated the duplex printing and you had to uncheck it if you wanted single sided pages.

How big of a TV is too big for a TV for a dorm?
