Is Priceline legit? Whats the catch?

I'm looking to book some hotels and flights for my trip to Chicago and Boston and noticed that some of the hotels were $100 less than other sites such as hotels.com, travelocity, kayak. What's the catch here? Is it legit?
Also, when I choose the flights, where can we choose our seats? They have flights and times that I couldn't find on the airlines direct site or kayak or any other sites. My girlfriend is really nervous about sitting alone or in the middle of 2 strangers if they pick seats randomly for us. Can someone give me some info about priceline. Thanks!

On an aside note, If you do get random seats on an airplane, you can usually find someone to switch with you so you can sit together.

Usually you can go to the airline and rechoose your own seats once you have a confirmation number. If not, just call the airline or do an online "chat" with someone from your airline after you purchase your tickets. They will find you seats together if there are seats together to be had

what i was pointing out is that if i choose to pay $80 at a hotel directly, i can check to see if they charge parking or resort fees and expect to pay that much extra. but if my budget is at most $80 and i don't want to pay extra fees, going with priceline with a 'surprise' hotel would add additional fees to my max budget.
going directly with a hotel, you know what the room rate is and what fees are associated.
going with priceline, you can set your budget, but if priceline accepts your bid for a resort, you are responsible for the additional fees out of pocket in addition to your max bid amount.
It can pay to use Priceline but you need to know what you're doing. Spend some time asking around (as you are doing right now, which is awesome), but also check out websites like www.hoteldealsr
Oh, it can also take up quite a lot of time if you want to use Priceline correctly. Rebidding, especially when you're new at it, can be slow and a bit stressful. But if you're a details oriented, thrifty kind of person, you'll do great.

Call me stupid, but how exactly does that list site work? Just look through the forums and see what people bid/won at?
