What is your deal-hunting origin story?

19,701 27,793 January 2, 2014 at 03:37 PM
Hello, I hope you are doing well.

Quote :
In comic book terminology, an origin story is an account or back-story revealing how a character or team gained their superpowers and/or the circumstances under which they became superheroes or supervillains.
What is your origin story? Sure, we may not have superpowers or are superheroes or supervillains, but what many of us do here is pretty super.

Were there events in your childhood that led you to your life of deal-hunting? Did you perhaps come from certain circumstances that changed you into a person who hates retail prices? Or perhaps this is all a new development and you're just doing it for fun, or out of necessity. (Oh, you may also be a person who does deal-hunting on the side and is mainly in these forums for The Lounge.)

I imagine Kiev as Iron Man. He may not have superpowers, but he runs fancy scripts for sites like Kohls.com and Amazon Warehouse Deals so that he can find the best deals.

it all started with a cd recorder at best buy...the day after black Friday.

Then I got diarrhea from eating a hot dog at home depot.

The Kev Meister (sp?) posted a deal where you could continuously roll over a ~ $9 (if I remember correctly) soup purchase @ S&S (Campbell's canned soups) into what amounted to be an essentially unlimited number of cans. (as I recall once you bought so many Campbell's items the register printed a coupon for $X off your next purchase which roughly equated to the purchase price of the soup on the first place).

I forget exactly how I stumbled on it (and this site) but I got well over 200 cans of soup out of it laugh out loud The food pantries around me must have been sick of NE clam chowder laugh out loud

I think I started out by finding out about Kmart's gaming clearance back in the PS1 or PS2 gen. Before then though I was a game flipper from EB Games to EB Games. Although that involved me buying a game at one EB and returning it to another with no receipt for more back in credit(aka return fraud). What was funny was that one EB Games would have a different price than the next, which is what I decided to exploit.

I think I had about $1200 in EB Games credit at one point just from doing that.

But it definitely started out with the Kmart clearance for me.

I picked up deals from different sites going back to 2000 or so... I think a 12X burner for $99 was my first.
I came to SD looking for a color laser printer, and stayed for the debauchery.

I learned the value in not paying retail back when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I was amazed that I could search the toy department at Woolworth and find items with an orange clearance sticker, especially on plastic car models, and that these items were deeply discounted from the original price.

I was quickly disappointed as I often realized that the items with these magical discounts hardly ever seemed to match up with the things I wanted to purchase. The solution to that presented itself when I discovered that the stickers would peel off in one piece if you were very careful. They then could be applied to the items that I found more appealing.

I would then take my prize to the checkout and pay with my hard-earned allowance money. My cleverness allowed me to stretch my funds much further and I would leave the store thinking to myself, "Now that was a Slickdeal!"

OMG - I did that with Nancy Drew books at a local store here that I could walk to Rofl2 I had every one in the series that I purchased for 25cents - which were much higher priced than that as a kid. There were none of those scored stickers back then; and no cameras, etc. That led to other items to be purchased at a deep discount as well Blush

DH told me about this site back in 2005. I lurked a bit, picking up deals and reading threads in the lounge. Finally signed up in 2006 to post a comment on a lounge thread. That's when the lounge door slammed shut and I realized there was no other way out. EEK! Cold
