What is your deal-hunting origin story?

Hello, I hope you are doing well.
What is your origin story? Sure, we may not have superpowers or are superheroes or supervillains, but what many of us do here is pretty super.
Were there events in your childhood that led you to your life of deal-hunting? Did you perhaps come from certain circumstances that changed you into a person who hates retail prices? Or perhaps this is all a new development and you're just doing it for fun, or out of necessity. (Oh, you may also be a person who does deal-hunting on the side and is mainly in these forums for The Lounge.)

In comic book terminology, an origin story is an account or back-story revealing how a character or team gained their superpowers and/or the circumstances under which they became superheroes or supervillains.

My story can be found below (in my signature), but it is similar to many of yours. Also grew up fairly poor, so finding ways to save money was a way of life for us.
In the pre-internet days.. checked the weekly ads, clipped coupons, comparison-shopped by foot (from store to store) for the more major items.
So it was only natural that I found my way to a Deal site and quickly became comfortable / addicted, etc.. and to work for a site that is dedicated to help people find the best deals possible is like a dream come true for me.
anyway, great thread TofuVic! It's fun to read everyone's story.

I somehow missed your response for a couple days, so we're even. =P
I have read that Deal Editor Spotlight story of yours twice since oFlamingo posted it. Just recently, I did a search for "Deal Editor Spotlight," thinking that perhaps oFlamingo or another staff member have interviewed additional DEs or other staff. Unfortunately, yours seem to be the only one available. I do hope that the Spotlight series does get picked back up. Come to think of it, that story of yours may have indirectly inspired me to come up with this thread.
I like how you used "comfortable" and "addicted" almost interchangeably when referring to Slickdeals.

In any case, I figured some people who shared their stories here may want to check out that thread.

I found SD by accident in 2006. After we had our kid and I wasn't working a full time job any more, I was looking for ways to save money. I was an Extreme Couponer before it was "en vogue". I have been this way since as far back as my first real job where I made my own money and could spend it how I pleased. I have never, and will never, pay full price. My favorite deal that hooked me forever was a free couch from Ikea back in 2001. Complain politely and correctly and you'll be surprised what you can get for free.

Finally in Dec of 2003, I had enough. Christmas was around the corner and I was frequenting the site often. I finally registered my info at Slickdeals. I remember when there were only 4 mods and Selma kept putting out front pagers constantly. She disappeared for some reason. Then maybe 3 or 4 years ago all of a sudden it seemed like they hired a boatload of new mods every year.
Things have slowly gotten better over the years. I like the new customized front page layout. Slickdeals is the king of all the deal hunting websites. Fat Wallet and others don't compare. Thing that struck me recently however, is that one of the things that makes Slickdeals successful is that it's not just a purely deal hunting website. It's a Social Networking Deal Hunting website.
Slickdeals was a social network before social networking websites became popular. Sometimes I will come on Slickdeals and find out more about the product than I can find on Google because of the comments people leave. The user comments are crucial. They help vet which deals are good and which ones aren't, which websites are legit, and which ones aren't. They know whose rebates they can rely on (Newegg) and whose they can't (TigerDirect). I think if Slickdeals can find a way to be more social I think the website will be even more popular. Right now it's comments, but if there was a way to foster more interaction with other people they could really be onto something.
