Need help with my next TV series on Netflix/Amazon Prime

41 17 February 14, 2014 at 07:32 PM in Chat (2)
In the last year I've watched all episodes of:
Lost
Heroes
Firefly
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Jericho

and enjoyed all of them immensely. Can't seem to find anything else yet on Netflix or Amazon that would be as good as those shows are. Anyone care to throw out some recommendations based on my top tier shows above? Tried 4400 and another one that I had to quit on lately. Thanks!

Several Loungers agree on:

Six Feet Under
Dexter
Breaking Bad

Unfortunately two of these options are in the OP. Confused

Dexter was absolutely ruined for me after watching shows with more understated, subdued acting and dialog. i liked the first season and took a break to catch up on Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, and Deadwood, but when i tried to go back, everything seemed so cheesy; couldn't get through season two.

here's my list; many are already on here, but it always help to hear it from multiple users to know which ones a lot of people like. i limited it to dramas since that's all you initially listed and put them in my personal order:
  • The Wire
  • Band of Brothers
  • The Walking Dead
  • Boardwalk Empire
  • Deadwood
  • Treme
  • Rescue Me (seasons three and four are awful, but the rest is worth it)
  • Friday Night Lights (it gets slow in season four, but the last season is worth it)
  • Louie (halfway between a comedy and drama)
  • 30 for 30 (if you're a sports fan)
  • The Pacific
i have a bunch of stuff i'm waiting to catch up on or try (The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy, Six Feet Under, American Horror Story, Orange Is the New Black, Homeland, etc.).

I searched for Six Feet Under on Netflix and Amazon Prime but its a no go. I think Michael C. Hall is in that one. Speaking of Dexter, I thought the Debra actress, Jennifer Carpenter, was very good (took a good long while for her character to grow on me though), but I can't seem to find much of her work.

I'm almost done with the first season of Farscape. A little iffy at this point, but I know how some shows take a little while to get going.

For the last year, I think my rankings would be:
Dexter
Breaking Bad
Lost
Firefly
Heroes
Jericho
Shame about Six Feet Under, it was available on Netflix for a really long time, didn't realize they pulled it from instant watch. Hopefully they will bring it back at some point, wouldn't mind watching it again. And yes, that is Michael C. Hall as one of the stars.

Since you like Dexter and Breaking Bad, you'd probably like Six Feet Under too. Very dark and quirky humor sort of show. Each episode started out showing the demise of someone who wound up at their funeral home. This is my all time favorite of those.

Another vote for 6 Feet Under if you can find it. I didn't read the whole thread, but I'd also say Sopranos, and Oz from HBO...Weeds and the Big C from Showtime...Downton Abbey...

Just finished season 1 of Vikings (from the History Channel, of all places.)
So, so, SO, so good. I highly recommend it.

Justified and Sons of Anarchy
Another vote for Justified. Particularly Season 2 with Margo Martindale.

Damages was ultimately too dark and died painfully slow due to poor seasonal guest stars. Pick up Suits instead. nod Great show with good laughs. White Collar and Covert Affairs are also decent. Six Feet Under should be available from your local public library. I found American Horror Story okay but at times offensive and that's saying a lot since I'm a horror fan. I get The Walking Dead confused with Waking the Dead a BBC show but both are good also Torchwood or Dollhouse if you like Whedon.

Just made me think of Deadwood too. Short-lived 3 or 4 seasons I think, but really good while it lasted...

Yeah I'd like to see Game of Thrones, but it is not on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I gave Freaks and Geeks and Terriers both a 3 episode trial run but they didn't make the cut. Farscape will be the next one up. I also have Mad Men, Arrested Development, 24, Fringe,Damages, and Friday Night Lights queued up for later. I'll check out the other recommendations.

I really liked Lost and Breaking Bad, but Dexter really jumped to the top of the pack for me.
Arrested Development woot

Watched the first episode of Mad Men. Seems good.

House of Cards definitely.

Try Weeds. My boyfriend liked it. He kind of tapered off towards the end of the series, but the beginning was good and he finished it like a champ.

I'm a fan of Supernatural. Two brothers who hunt down and kill supernatural creatures. If you're into that sorta thing.

Deadwood was great, but there's no ending. They cancelled the show and just stopped making it. A movie was promised to wrap everything up, but that never happened.

my coworker told me this, and i was bracing myself for the worst, but i don't think it was that bad at all. without getting into spoilers, i'll say the primary conflict of that season was resolved and the rest of the characters/relationships were at least in relatively stable places. i definitely would have liked more episodes, but it wasn't nearly as sudden as he indicated.
