Need help with my next TV series on Netflix/Amazon Prime

41 17 February 14, 2014 at 07:32 PM in Chat (2)
In the last year I've watched all episodes of:
Lost
Heroes
Firefly
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Jericho

and enjoyed all of them immensely. Can't seem to find anything else yet on Netflix or Amazon that would be as good as those shows are. Anyone care to throw out some recommendations based on my top tier shows above? Tried 4400 and another one that I had to quit on lately. Thanks!

Several Loungers agree on:

Six Feet Under
Dexter
Breaking Bad

Unfortunately two of these options are in the OP. Confused

i disagree for any series with multi-episode (or multi-season) story arcs; anything you gain in overall quality is more than offset by lack of knowledge, at least for me. i'm trying to think of watching Breaking Bad, The Wire, Rescue Me, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, or many other good shows starting in season two, and it would have left out vital information on characters and situations. crap, you'd miss a good number of gags on 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Archer, and Community if you skipped the first season.

now for series which are more episode-centric (Louie is the best example i can think of), you can get away with skipping ahead. but you'll still be missing running gags and might be confused why a character reacted in some way.

I would never intentionally start a series in season 2, but I will almost always wait until there is a 2nd or 3rd season in the can or in production to being watching season one, since so many "good" shows have been cancelled during or immediately following their inaugural season...
yep, i normally don't start watching shows until the second season has been produced/released; don't want to get into a good show only to have it go into a downward spiral in season two (The Killing) or get cancelled with no real resolution (Freaks and Geeks). of course, there are exceptions for shows like True Detective.

that was unclear language/structure: i started watching True Detective while the first season was airing, thus making it an exception to my "wait until at least two seasons have aired" rule.

By doing that you miss the back story on all the characters, so you don't know what's going on or what motivates a person to act/react the way they do in season two. Starting with season two in a lot of shows would leave you confused, a good example is Dexter.

So, the two of you are the reason they canceled Firefly! Annoyed

Maybe, but I do avoid a lot of disappointment...

Justified is a good example of where skipping Season 1 was a good thing. If I had started with one I would've dtiched it and not keept watching.

Season one sucked but two, with Margo, was awesomeness. heart

I never got into Justified, a bit too violent for me. However DH started with season 1 and stills watches the show.

Seems like you are looking for an answer when its obvious...

Go do something else

Quit being tied to the TV pretty sad when you have to search in an online forum for stuff to watch

Best things on TV are sports, news and science shows..rest is fluff

Last good series was LOST until the end

Roll

Why are sports not categorized into the "fluff?"

I posted in it, a couple times.

I don't care to get into a battle of wits with her. The challenge is so lacking, it's excruciating.
