Automakers will be required to install backup cameras in most new vehicles by May 2018, a federal agency announced Monday. [cnn.com]

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized a long-awaited rule requiring all new cars, SUVs, and minivans, as well as some new small trucks and buses to carry rear visibility technology.

There are some idiots...that have bought bikes...and that's too bad as it gives the rest of us a bad rep.
They did a bunch for the same show. It's one of their better episodes.
I bike and run and I've come to the conclusion that pretty much everyone is an idiot when you put them in/ on a wheeled vehicle.

There's going to be a TON of old people on the road who physically can't turn their neck/back far enough to do the old "throw an arm over the seat and look out the back" maneuver.
I drive a stick - very difficult to not use the right arm while simultaneously twisting away from access to the transmission.

Too many people rely on physically looking backward- learn to drive with the mirrors.

Yeh, same here. It makes me feel like a safer driver though. I am guessing if you are against them you probably have never driven with them.

I'm not against them, in fact I like them. I just don't think they should be mandatory.

And I don't think you can possible back up safely only looking at the screen. The screen only shows what is directly behind you. You can't see what is about to come into your path until it gets in the view of the camera. Looking over your shoulder you still have peripheral vision if someone is about to walk behind you as you are backing up. The camera is just another version of a mirror--you check it to make sure nothing is in your blind spot and then use all other options to see where you are going. It scares me that people think the camera replaces the mirrors and actually looking backwards.

Oh yeah laugh out loud
Just back up until you feel resistance and then go a little bit more. Then go forward.

Then the blindspot cameras will be next.

And then pretty soon being safe gets so complicated that it is more dangerous than it was before. Getting people to pay attention to their farking driving instead of being distracted by everything else would be a better start.

Suicide's not an option, dear.

That's what the mirrors are for!

fat people probably have same issue.

inability to parallel park, look over your shoulder to look behind you, and SEE. fail any one of the 3 should have license removed. tired of these 95 year old citizens pulling their Delta '88 through a CVS wall not being able to look over their shoulder to properly back into the store to pick up their script, then finding [D] to pull out.
Not only am I fat , but do not see in 3d as I'm blind in one eye and have absolutely no problems backing into spaces
