Santa Barbara murders

12,104 277 May 26, 2014 at 05:56 AM in News (2)
Hundreds gathered at a memorial service Sunday night to mourn six young people killed two nights earlier by a gunman in a California college town.

Elliot Rodger, 22, the son of a Hollywood director, fatally stabbed three people in his apartment before shooting dead three others on Friday in Isla Vista, near the University of California at Santa Barbara campus. He then shot himself.
Rodger killed two women and four men, aged 19 to 22, and wounded 13 people, including eight who he shot as he sped through town in his black BMW, exchanging fire with police, authorities said.
Minutes before opening fire the former community college student emailed his plans to some 30 people including his mother, father and former teachers, said Cathleen Bloeser, whose son was a childhood friend of Rodger and received a copy.
Rodger stated his intention to kill his housemates, lure others to his home to continue the mayhem then slaughter women in a sorority and bring his spree to the streets of Isla Vista.
The manifesto, which details Rodger's fear that his guns might have been discovered when police visited him less than a month ago, was not the first indication of a troubled mind.

Am I the only one who sees the results of raising a self-esteem based "everyone gets a trophy" generation here? When everyone gets a trophy and every child is constantly told that they are special and everything they do is amazing, they never learn how to deal with rejection and failure. Failure is part of life and shielding children from it to preserve their self esteem is like smothering your child in antibiotics their whole life to protect them from getting sick and then wondering why they have no immune system when they grow up. If a child never learns how to cope with losing and being wrong, when they reach adulthood they don't have the mental faculties to deal with the failure they will invariably encounter in their adult lives. The guy who shot those innocent people in Santa Barbara claims that it was revenge for being rejected by the girls and the popular kids at his college. I was rejected by girls and popular kids my entire life and shooting a bunch of people never entered my mind. Maybe instead of giving our kids a trophy when they lose, we should teach them that losing is a part of life and give them the tools that they need to cope with failure, learn from it, and then get on with their lives.

Just a thought.

So... anecdotal evidence?
I educate approximately 100-120 college students every semester. I have been working as a professor for 2 years and I worked as a teaching assistant in grad school for 6 years before that. I have probably personally worked with at least 500-800 undergraduate college students in my career in higher education. I am currently working on publishing a white paper with several of my colleagues on the link between attendance and performance in entry level college courses. Our data set will have information on the behavior of somewhere around 10,000 college students.

I would hardly call my experience with the current generation of young adults "anecdotal evidence".

You totally should have just posted this right in the podium, it's headed there. laugh out loud

And you're not entertaining any other contributing factors, just the one... Dontknow
I specifically posted the thread to discuss the potential contribution of that factor because that is what I am interested in. One of my major areas of study in my pedagogy coursework in grad school was generational differences in college students. Where did I say that this is the one and only cause of the shooting? I simply asked whether others felt like there is a link between the self esteem philosophy dominating lower level education and the attitude of the shooter. Am I not allowed to ask about one potential factor without specifically mentioning every other potential factor as well? Why am I not allowed to specifically explore this one issue?

Can you please point to where I said that the self esteem philosophy is "responsible for churning out mass murderers?"
Clearly it is right there plain as day. Right there next to where the bunny blames liberals for everything. You can't miss it.

Maybe for the same reason I am not able to do the same. Dontknow

I don't know. Dontknow I guess if I had nice cars I would be more content. I just like to drive a lot. I know it's not relevant..but I guess this kid came off to me as "Guy who was given everything...and never had to work for anything in his life."

Maybe not, but the way he dressed and talked, gave off such a "Douche" feel to me.

The BMW just kind of helped solidify that.

Yeah clearly I was totally blaming the shooting 100% on this one issue and stating the link between the self esteem philosophy is unequivocally to blame for ALL mass murderers. Mal and bunny, did you guys even read my post or did you just read the top part above the link and assume you knew what I was going to say about it? Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

And this is why I don't post in The Podium anymore... partisan colored glasses make it impossible to communicate because people don't read what you actually write, they just read what they want to see instead. You twisted my argument into something that didn't even remotely resemble what I said and then proceeded to argue against that fantasy argument instead of the argument I actually made. Sigh.

No, you're right. If you read his manifesto, that becomes infinitely clear.

I didn't read the whole thing, but skimmed and read several pages. It was disturbing. I'm just glad he didn't take out more people before he met his end.

So... having nicer cars = being more content and/or happier? Does that extrapolate to all possessions in general, or does it stop at cars?

Personally I think that's a problem with our culture in general. People correlate money and possessions to happiness and then they go out and accumulate all this material stuff and wonder why they aren't happy. I have so many friends who make a ton of money but they hate their jobs and they're always stressed out. I don't make a lot of money, but I love what I do and I wake up every day excited to go to work. I think it's better to do something you enjoy and make less money than to do something you hate just so you can get a fancy car or an enormous house.

Wait, do you mean like you haven't read anything I posted here and just automatically go on about how I blame liberals for everything? Pot, meet kettle. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Aren't the educators of our kids supposed to be open minded and not fall into the trap of preconceived notions?

Usually. Depends on the person. Like for me example...I'm happy with certain smartphones, not with others. And then I see some people with older phones that barely run or one of my good friends that still has a flip phone. He's content with it. I could never deal with either of those.

I'm just in the age group, so I get his mentality a bit. Maybe his dad just gave him the car for no reason...my parents gave me their old (very nice) car when I graduated from high school to drive to college, which I was very appreciative of.

I don't know..here in SoCal I see my friends with "lesser" cars seem to take better care of it versus those with the expensive luxury cars that whine and bitch because their parents got them a Lexus instead of the Porsche. Cry me a river.
