Formula 1 the 2015 edition ****Mercedes is suing their Senior Engineer**** (post 172)

Huh Scratchhead

Formula One racing's governing body, the FIA, has revealed details of a new Super Licence points system, making it harder for drivers to become eligible for F1 competition.

From 2016, drivers must have accumulated 40 points over a three-year period, with points allocation based on which other motorsport series they have participated in and the level of results they achieved.

Drivers will have also have to be at least 18-years old, have spent at least two years in junior single-seater categories, hold a valid road driver's licence and pass a test on the Formula One sporting regulations. The existing requirement of completing 300 kilometres in a recent F1 car also remains.

*snip*

If such a system had been in place ahead of 2015, new Toro Rosso signing Max Verstappen would be ineligible to race in F1 this year, having accrued just 20 points by finishing third in the 2014 FIA F3 European championship - the 17-year-old's only season of car racing to date.

Also, interestingly, Honda has vetoed plans for Alonso to race in a Porsche at Le Mans.

(it's rumored Mark Webber got Fernando the invitation to begin with)

because it would be impossible to have an automatic speed limiter for yellow flag areas.... oh wait they already do that for pit lane.
The problem with that is the driver would have to know there's an issue on track and hit the button, it's not automatic despite the name. And from what they've recommended, as far as having the races start earlier, they must think Jules didn't see the yellow flag warning.

when they were in Austin, one driver from each team participated in a 'virtual safety car' test after one of the practice sessions, which I believe involved more stringent control of speed in a particular session, without a safety car directly in front.

IIRC, they had discussed being able to send out maximum speed limit signals to the cars, but there were issues with when they would hit the cars - no F1 driver wants to have power taken away without warning, especially if it were to happen during some traction critical event like cornering.

And in other news...

FIA president Jean Todt and medical chief Gerard Saillant are planning legal action against former Formula 1 driver Philippe Streiff over comments relating to the Jules Bianchi crash investigation.

Streiff, who is confined to a wheelchair as the result of an F1 testing accident in Brazil in 1989, has been widely quoted in French media as suggesting the panel that looked into Bianchi's Japanese Grand Prix accident was put together simply to exonerate the FIA of any blame for what happened.

I might give in to TWC's constant mailings about cheap cable offers so I can actually watch F1 again this year, rather than relying on less than legal internet streams and the rare broadcast race...

Alonso crashed last weekend in testing, they said he was unhurt but concussed and was being kept in 'overnight' as a precaution. However he was just released from the hospital today and will miss the four days of testing that start tomorrow. So there's something to the story that they aren't telling us.

LMAO sad, but true.... even Lotus' excellent social media feed is getting tired of all the Pastor crashing jokes, but it would be easier on them if it didn't feel so true Doh

McLaren announced today Alonso is going to the miss season opening race in Oz to continue to recover fully from the concussion he suffered in testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 22nd.
Full text from McLaren
Quote :

Having performed an exhaustive series of tests and scans – some of them as recently as yesterday evening – McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso's doctors have informed him that they find him asymptomatic of any medical issue; that they see no evidence whatsoever of any injury; and that they therefore describe him as entirely healthy from neurological and cardiac perspectives alike.

However, Fernando's doctors have recommended to him that, following the concussion he sustained in a testing accident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 22nd, for the time being he should seek to limit as far as is possible any environmental risk factors that could potentially result in his sustaining another concussion so soon after his previous one, so as to minimise the chances of second impact syndrome, as is normal medical procedure when treating athletes after concussions.

My guess is they know the still have huge problems with the Honda power unit so why risk him when you can just throw K-Mag in there and get someone that has race experience and car experience and knows how to communicate that his engine blew up just as much as Alonso does.
