Formula 1 the 2015 edition ****Mercedes is suing their Senior Engineer**** (post 172)

Huh Scratchhead

Formula One racing's governing body, the FIA, has revealed details of a new Super Licence points system, making it harder for drivers to become eligible for F1 competition.

From 2016, drivers must have accumulated 40 points over a three-year period, with points allocation based on which other motorsport series they have participated in and the level of results they achieved.

Drivers will have also have to be at least 18-years old, have spent at least two years in junior single-seater categories, hold a valid road driver's licence and pass a test on the Formula One sporting regulations. The existing requirement of completing 300 kilometres in a recent F1 car also remains.

*snip*

If such a system had been in place ahead of 2015, new Toro Rosso signing Max Verstappen would be ineligible to race in F1 this year, having accrued just 20 points by finishing third in the 2014 FIA F3 European championship - the 17-year-old's only season of car racing to date.

Yikes. I saw a short video where he turned into the wall and the car was sliding down the wall and was wondering why they said it was so bad. I didn't see the part where he slammed into the water barriers. I think they better rethink those things.

I wonder if they changed the design of those techpro barriers after they went back to the low noses? It seems like they went back to low noses to prevent the one of Mark Weber crash where he got flipped by another car, but it also seems more like to have crashes like this, where the nose helps underride barriers at the edge of the track Dontknow hard to plan for everything, as the last year+ of racing has shown Cool

I've decided I'm not going to the USGP for the full weekend this year shake head I just bought a Friday only ticket on stubhub. It's in the lower level of the main grandstand, and I was able to snag it for only $24 with the fees and shipping Bigeye I could have paid ~$50 to sit in the upper main grandstand, but I felt this was too good a deal to pass up, even with the lack of photography opportunities from the lower main grandstand. I'll have to add in $25 for the shuttle to the track, but since they normally charge $15 or more for single day parking for every other event, I guess it's not so bad and the shuttle from downtown is walking distance from my place.

We'll see what happens with the weather, right now it's 50% rain chance Friday and Saturday, 30% on Sunday, mostly early. with the main grandstand seats I can hide in the area underneath the upper grandstand if I need to.

If I can find a good deal for Saturday I'll consider going for that, too, but so far the best deal I can find on stubhub is $45 for row 15 in turn 15, which is just sort of okay on price, IMO.

my stubhub ticket order was waiting for me when I got home today, it was even the right ticket Whee bounce it's supposed to rain pretty much all day tomorrow, though, which could be a bit weird. It's enough of a chance of rain all weekend that I do think the teams will run at least, as long as conditions aren't completely horrible Hide

I hope it pours buckets of rain, Texas needs it.

And Hamilton is good in the rain.

Hurricane Patricia has made a mess of the F1 track near Austin. Practice was washed out and qualifying has been moved to Sunday morning at 9 central time. So check your DVR if you want to record qualifying!

In the absence of any track activity, mechanics and drivers put on their own entertainment.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat performed country dancing moves, Rosberg played around with a soccer ball and a Force India mechanic showed off some breakdancing.

Toro Rosso's Dutch teenager Max Verstappen produced a fishing rod while father Jos, a former F1 racer, donned overalls and helmet and squeezed into the car while team mate Carlos Sainz's father did the same.

Sauber mechanics 'paddled' down the pitlane in a crate on wheels, with a propeller on the end, pulled by others.

what a bizarre day Faint basically was raining for more than 12 hours. It has finally let up in the last hour, but appears to be raining a bit again now. the rain stays around through about noon tomorrow, but it should be gone in time for the race at 2pm Ohmy Whee

I'm not sure I want to even bother dealing with the whole mess tomorrow even with the improved forecast. I'm sure the grounds are a mess, and the shuttles will be packed because many parking lots are closed.

lots of fans are pissed off, but while I get that they are upset, I think COTA has handled things reasonably well. Those who stuck it out at the track today got a free pitwalk and driver autograph session at 5pm despite not seeing any racing, and they are honoring Saturday only tickets tomorrow, too. Some people with weekend passes are upset about that, but I don't see the point in that. If you go the US Open Tennis tournament in NYC, the individual days get rain checks for the same session the next year, but series ticket holders don't, because they get to see everything with their tickets anyway, they're not losing out on any rounds they would have seen otherwise. The same basically applies here, IMO nod

I think I'll watch from the comfort of my couch tomorrow, but I probably will go to the track in a few weeks for the vintage racing nationals which have been good fun in the past nod

I assume ZM is pretty happy now with Lewis as three time world champion Smilie

that was a pretty good race to watch, although I still think I made the right call by watching on TV this year nod

Nico is normally pretty classy, but today was definitely past his breaking point nod You don't get to that level without being competitive, but he also certainly didn't lose the championship just today shake head

I wonder where Mercedes is out partying at tonight? laugh out loud I know a bunch of the drivers and typically Bernie stay at the four seasons not too far from me.

Ricciardo was pretty funny in the post race interview, the team had been telling him to keep the weight down but he loves barbecue, so he pledged to eat until he was sad with whatever Austin bbq he could find laugh out loud

Well, Nico threw the hat back at Hamilton, like a bad tempered school brat and pouted on the podium. That could be overlooked but he was fussing to the press in a way that made him sound like a sore loser and a bit of an asshat.

Quote :
The German was leading when he ran wide with seven laps to go, a mistake that allowed Hamilton to blast past and take the victory.

"I just got wheelspin. It's never happened to me, ever. Not even in testing or racing, never, ever something like that. I can't explain it. It's unbelievable. I don't know," he told reporters.

"We just need to look into it afterwards but obviously that was really, really tough at the time, to lose the lead like that and to lose the win, because I was feeling really good at that point and it just went wrong."

I heard the thing about Ricciardo, that was pretty funny. I wonder which BBQ joint he made a beeline for after the race? laugh out loud

I went to a conference today at the JW Marriott in downtown austin today, and as I was walking in there were a good group of people wearing F1 gear with luggage in the lobby areas. I'm betting they had traveled over from Europe and were doing the double, catching the USGP last weekend and the Mexico GP this weekend

Guess they needed to mollify Rosberg by handing him a win. Annoyed

Susie Wolff: Female F1 test driver to retire after Race of Champions

The Scot - the first woman to take part in a grand prix weekend for more than 20 years - believes her aim of racing in Formula 1 "isn't going to happen".

"It was a decision I made at the end of the summer. There was very little opportunity to carry on in Formula 1," the 32-year-old told BBC Breakfast.

"My goal was to get on to the starting grid and that didn't look achievable. So I had to call it a day."

She added: "I always said that as soon as I couldn't get any further I would stop and that time has come."

Wolff will make one more appearance as a racing driver - in the Race of Champions in London's Olympic Stadium on 20-21 November, racing for Scotland alongside former F1 driver and BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard.

*snip*

But her decision to retire was partly influenced by an incident in March, when her team ruled out the possibility of using her as racing cover for Valtteri Bottas in Malaysia. [bbc.com]

"I don't think it was the pivotal moment, but it was one of the moments where I could just see it getting harder and harder," she said.
