NASCAR 2015 No OT please Chase for the Sprint Cup CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND Final Race: Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway

I haven't ever seen much love around here for Nascar but I figured I would see if there is enough discussion to warrant a thread.

If you don't like Nascar, if you don't get Nascar, if all it looks like to you is driving around in a circle then just go away.

If you aren't aware of the huge changes that Nascar has made in recent years it may be worth another look. Quite a few years back they started a "playoff" system known as The Chase. Last year they made a huge change in that by using an elimination system in the playoff to reduce the remaining racers eligible for the championship after each round. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on the details now, but I'm interested in other opinions on both having a playoff and the way Nascar is doing it.

I welcome negative comments, but just keep it respectful and including reasons for them. If you just want to insult Nascar and oval-racing then go somewhere else.

Xtreme Motorsports was the team that almost had to withdraw from the Daytona 500 because their primary car got wrecked in practice. So they probably only have 1-2 "race ready" cars available. It's too bad that one of the other big money teams couldn't either loan or somehow get them a car. I guess they don't want to risk not having a backup car available if their primary gets wrecked, but can you imagine the PR move if Hendrick gives up Kasey Kahne's backup car so Xtreme doesn't have to withdraw?

It sounds like the hauler left early to beat the impending weather, and the primary car wasn't ready. So they took a smaller trailer down the next day, and that's what got stolen. My guess is somebody knew what they were carrying and targeted them.
I was wondering about that. I think I remember one of the teams borrowing a backup car for the Daytona 500 but I can't think of who it was. It may even have been in the Xfinity or the truck series. Maybe Stewart/Haas could let them use one of Danica's backup cars....nah, she will probably need them all. laugh out loud

On the Sirius Nascar channel they were saying that there may have been a lot of their equipment in that trailer as well although I would think a lot of it would have been in the main hauler. But I guess one of the biggest hurdles even if they found a car was that Kvapil's racing seat was in the car and if he doesn't have an extra one he would be screwed. Those seats are certified and fitted for the driver so it wouldn't be as easy as just finding any other seat.

The good news is the race car was found this morning, and appears to be unharmed. It's now back at the team's shop near Charlotte.

The Atlanta race starts in less than an hour. This will be the first race that should show us how the new rules package will affect the cars. Less horsepower, less downforce. I hope it makes the racing better as they anticipate.

You really think it will? I don't. The intermediate tracks will continue to be snoozefests.

Do I think it will? Probably not.

But on the other hand it really can't hurt. The only chance I think it has to help is if it does open up more racing lines. Supposedly the speeds on the straightaways will be a little lower which should let them run a little faster through the turns. I think there is a slight chance that could make things a little more interesting, especially in the first couple of races where this is pretty new to the drivers.

It could also backfire for the same reason I suppose. Faster speeds in the turns could limit where the cars can run even more. This week might be fun just because there are so many of the top driver starting at the back of the pack. I've always said they should use an inverted starting lineup where the fastest cars start at the back like they do at many of the smaller local tracks across the country. laugh out loud

Definitely a snoozefest here. Literally. I dozed off sometime during the rain delay and woke up about halfway through the race. laugh out loud

Can't tell much from one race but this one wasn't all that fun to watch. Other than the restarts there just wasn't a lot to watch. Once they got rolling the pack got spread out and it was like watching most open-wheel racing--a bunch of cars running in a line around the track with an occasional pass here and there.

Some more fuel for the safer-barrier push after Gordon pasted the concrete wall not more than a few feet from the end of the safer barrier. Speaking of Gordon, he is not off to much of a start in his final year with a 41st place finish today and 33rd place at Daytona. I've never been a big fan but I hope he finishes out the year a lot better than that.

Danica stayed out of trouble and finished with another solid but unremarkable finish at 16th, one lap down. Still ahead of her boss Tony Stewart though who finished 6 laps down at 30th and fellow team replacement driver Regan Smith who followed her across the finish line in 17th. The star of the team is still Kevin Harvick who starts off the year with two consecutive 2nd place finishes.

Gordon was a victim today. He got wrecked when Hamlin got loose and collected him in the melee. I don't see his streak of bad finishes continuing.

Harvick and Logano have continued where they left off last season. Hamlin and Newman were mid-pack guys last year, and that's continued a bit this year. Hamlin looked good at the beginning of the race, but faded until his crash.

How about Brett Moffit? 9th place finish subbing for Brian Vickers. Too bad he loses his ride next week when Vickers is scheduled to return. MWR needs to get him more starts.

Great job by Moffitt today. I didn't even see that earlier and I didn't watch much of the post race before I went to do other things. They are showing it as an 8th place finish now, even better. He may not have a full-time ride yet but you can bet that opportunity and finish got a lot of eyes looking at him. It won't be long and we will be seeing a lot of him I bet.

Jimmie looked in top form in Atlanta. I thought Logano was unstoppable early on but after a few pit stops and restarts, he really didn't look the same. They blamed it on the cool conditions early in the race and the effect on the track later probably had an effect on his car. Well Jimmie was in the same boat and that car, as Knauss said over the comms, that he had the fastest car on the track and it showed.

I saw an interview with Logano and he said their car didn't really fall off but everyone else got better as the conditions changed. There is nobody better than Chad Knaus at improving a car as the race goes on and making changes to the car as the track conditions change. I'm sure a lot of that is the communication between Jimmie and Chad as to what the car is doing.

It looked like Harvick was the only one who had anything at all for the 48 car but once Jimmie got out front there wasn't anyone going to catch him. They definitely earned that win.

Johnson did what he's normally done - ride quietly mid-pack until about 2/3 through the race, then hammer down and run away with the show.

Of course Hamlin taking out a few good cars didn't hurt him either. laugh out loud

Totally agrees there. It's crucial for winning championships and he's proven it over the years, time and time again.

Looks like they're trying to catch them young! (Good strategy - My son started watching NASCAR when he was 5. He's 8 now. No one else in our family watched before he did...we all had to learn to like it because otherwise we had no idea what he was talking about.)

Kurt Busch not facing charges in Delaware. Once he completes NASCAR's road to recovery plan, my guess is he will be reinstated.
