I haven't ever seen much love around here for Nascar but I figured I would see if there is enough discussion to warrant a thread.
If you don't like Nascar, if you don't get Nascar, if all it looks like to you is driving around in a circle then just go away.
If you aren't aware of the huge changes that Nascar has made in recent years it may be worth another look. Quite a few years back they started a "playoff" system known as The Chase. Last year they made a huge change in that by using an elimination system in the playoff to reduce the remaining racers eligible for the championship after each round. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on the details now, but I'm interested in other opinions on both having a playoff and the way Nascar is doing it.
I welcome negative comments, but just keep it respectful and including reasons for them. If you just want to insult Nascar and oval-racing then go somewhere else.

I was glad to see him back but this gives Brett Moffitt a chance to drive the 55 car this weekend instead of the 34. The 55 should be a little better car but then again jumping around between cars and teams from one week to the next can't be easy either.
And as I was typing that Moffitt bounced the 55 off the wall in qualifying
I'm not expecting much from the race this weekend but at least I should get to watch it. No reason that Kenseth couldn't pull off another victory but I think this is the week his streak ends.
Feel-good pick of the week: I would love to see David Ragan pull out a victory in Kyle Busch's 18 car.
Vickers can't catch a break.

They were showing Kenseth's car during qualifying when I typed that I think.
I was kind of getting used to Carl Edwards driving that orange car but this one looks great:
No yellow for Danica this week. Maybe if her car doesn't already look like a caution flag with wheels she won't wreck as much.
The setup: The talk about Fontana this week is how much the drivers like the surface of the track because it is finally getting worn out and rough. It seems like whenever they repave a track the surface is too smooth and the quality of the racing sucks for a long time until the asphalt gets rough and weathered.
In an interview this week Jeff Gordon was discussing the surface of the track and talking about different tracks that have been repaved. At one point he said: "I don't have a problem with new asphalt, I just want it to be like the old asphalt."
Maybe you had to be there.
Probably will be another snoozefest on Sunday.
I also read the other day that Lionel, which makes most of the NASCAR die-casts, said that Toyota die-casts may not ship until August. So if you order one or are looking for one as a gift for somebody, it may be a while before it arrives.

For Sunday I would like to see a decent number of cautions to keep the pack tight. I'm still not terribly hopeful it will be all that fun to watch though.

I only got to watch about the last 5 laps plus the two green/white/checker restarts. I listened to most of it on the radio as I was off on a Sunday drive picking up a couple more vintage snowmobiles to add to my collection.
Great action at the end but that was some of the worst camera management I have ever seen in a race that had so much action at the end. We didn't even get to see the pass for the lead by Keselowski but we did get to watch a close-up of Biffle sitting there in the middle of the track for a while while the race for the win was still going on elsewhere. I think everyone was expecting the caution flag to come out and got caught sleeping.
At first I thought that at the very end Busch let up to let Harvick get the second spot to keep his streak alive but after watching the replay a couple of times he just lost that much momentum making that desperate last move to get back around Keselowski that Harvick just got past him on the final stretch.

Brett Moffitt is still in the 55 car filling in for Vickers. He hasn't shown a lot since his great 8th place finish in Atlanta. He finished 22nd last week in the 55 but the two weeks before that he was 37th and 32nd in the 34 car. I think if he can get settled in to one car for a few weeks in a row with one team he will probably earn a permanent seat before too long. With Vickers' future pretty uncertain at this point maybe that 55 car could end up as his.
And one more name that will become very familiar in coming years is Chris Buescher who got his first start in the 34 car last week and had a good finish at 20th. He will be in the 34 car again this week. I don't know that much about Buescher but he is 2nd in points in the Xfinity series currently and is expected to be one of the group of young drivers who will be making their way into Sprint Cup cars full time in the near future.

They will get the equipment figured out. I hope they do it soon. And I would like to see it happen around the time Buescher, Ryan Reed, and Darrell Wallace Jr become the Roush Sprint Cup drivers. I want to see Roush back in the game again. They are going to have to step it up if they want to keep those young future stars around very long. If not then those guys will be driving for someone else.
