The Gyro ... OMG!!!!! We got the Gyro flavored ones at Walmart last night and Holy Mother of GAWD, they are awful!

I opened the bag in the car and almost immediately my youngest son asked "did someone take their shoes off? I smell stinky feet." Then I tasted one. Sick It's like .... like .... Gorgonzola cheese and stinky feet. Or the old padding you pull up from under a carpet that has gotten wet numerous times.

*HURL*

I called Lay's this morning and said "You know that "freshness guaranteed" sticker on the bag? Yeah, well, I would like to report this bag of Gorgonzola cheese and feet as outdated and I demand my money back!" The lady on the other end TOTALLY agreed. laugh out loud She said that Biscuits & Gravy is the best this year and that we should try those. They are sending me a coupon for a free bag.

You.have.been.warned.

laugh out loud That was the one I think I was at first most excited to try because I had hoped it would have the tzatziki flavoring to it but from everything I've heard it doesn't and it's just awful.

I got the reuben one. I didn't taste sauerkraut in it at all..at least I don't think I did. It had more of a pickle taste, I hate pickles though and didn't hate these so maybe it wasn't as pickley as I thought. I'm no help.

It's tough to judge what any of them taste like based on someone else's opinion because everyone tastes things a little differently.

But it is still fun to read what others have to say. This review was kind of fun to read. I copied it yesterday but don't remember where it was from and I am too lazy to look for it again for a link:

So what do they taste like?

This year's lineup may have been playing it safe with a group of safe flavors but the overall impression was pretty "meh." There's usually one trainwreck of a flavor and a couple that battle for the crown. This year's contenders, though, are, at best, palatable munchies and, at worst, just plain boring. Here's how I ranked them:

4. West Coast Truffle Fries - These seemed like a shoe-in for an early contender. It easily has the best concept: West Coast Truffle fries are awesome, which means truffle chips should be too. This whole thing should've just been a matter of Lay's throwing some truffle salt and Parmesan on their chips before calling it a day and giving it the title. Unfortunately, they just taste like a lame version of sour cream and onion.Somewhere between the decision to make these chips wavy and the choice to go overly herb-y in the flavoring, the West Coast Truffle Fries chips came out pretty bland. The chips pretty much just get caught up in a muddle of oil flavor and fall flat like a 9-year-old in a potato sack race [fjcdn.com] as they hit the tongue.

3. New York Reuben - Out of all of the flavors, New York Reuben was definitely the truest to the food item that inspired it. You definitely get the flavor profile of a Reuben that's sort of like a barbecue chip with a hazy mixture of corned beef and cheese. But there's also an odd aftertaste in there somewhere, the identity of which has divided myself and Food & Dining Warchief Sarah Platanitis. I think it's rye bread. She thinks I don't know what things taste like. Regular bread is great. Wheat, white, whatever - it tastes like bread. Rye bread, meanwhile, is the "Murder She Wrote" of gluten. It's old people bread. It's completely lost on the younger generation, like beepers and showing up to social gatherings on time.Rye bread tastes like it's haunted by an angry fennel ghost. It tastes like its ingredients come from a dustpan inside a rusty abandoned factory that's infested by rats that only eat black licorice.Editor's note: Nick really means to say caraway, which is a looks-similar cousin of fennel that tastes more like dill. Those rats should really be eating pickles. With that said: The chips weren't terrible, aftertaste aside.

2. Greektown Gyro - The more complex potato chip flavors have a tendency to latch onto one flavor and go nuts with it. This is especially true with the Greektown Gyro chip, which tastes a lot more like the cucumber-dill tzatziki sauce that comes with this Greek food item. But that's not a bad thing. The dill chip is a pretty good chip. I only wish there was a more savory aspect than just the dill to reflect the entirely of a gyro. Instead, it's got a nice crunch as a kettle-style chip that comes with a big, tart dill flavor. It's good, but a little harsh, like a Greek Cool Ranch Dorito.

1. Southern Biscuits & Gravy - The gravy candy cane remains the worst thing I've ever eaten [masslive.com] for this stupid column. But I still believe in gravy. It's done so many good things for me in the past, mostly in relation to turkey, mashed potatoes and, in a few fleeting instances, biscuits.Fortunately, it sort of works here. The chips are pretty much dusted with a dry gravy mix that adds a nice savory flavor that keep the chip light. Because of this, Southern Biscuits & Gravy is actually the most bingeable chip of the bunch, allowing you to get some serious snacking momentum going before you realize that you've eaten half the bag. That's the sign of a well-designed chip, even if the flavor still pales in comparison to the better chips Lay's has to offer.

So are they good?
Not really. They've all got flaws. Depending on your outlook, the Southern Biscuits & Gravy flavor is either "best" or "least bad." Probably the latter.

The final word

This year's flavors weren't especially exciting. Here are the top 10 flavors Lay's should do next, ranked:

10. Ramen
9. Black Bean Burrito
8. Corn Bread
7. Spaghetti & Meatballs
6. Buttered Popcorn
5. Apple Pie
4. Graham Cracker
3. Curry
2. Thousand Island Dressing
1. Chicken Parm

I assure you, every single word of that is an outright lie. It should have read like this:

Greektown Gyro - The more disgusting potato chip flavors have a tendency to latch onto one flavor and go nuts with it. This is especially true with the Greektown Gyro chip, which tastes a lot more like the ass crack of an old Greek man. I only wish there was a more savory aspect than just the foot fungus smell to reflect the entirety of the nastiness. Instead, it's got a nice crunch as a kettle-style chip that comes with a big, nasty, pungent flavor. It's NOT good, and extremely harsh, like the ass crack of an old Greek man that only bathes twice a year. Enjoy!

guess there's some flavor of the biscuits and gravy, most I taste from them is pepper.

if you like Wasabi Ginger and never tried the chips yet, do, they really nailed that one.

Was that one of last year's contest flavors? I never did get to try that one. Do they still sell those?

Yeah it was from last year. I'm not sure if it was the winner or not. I think the mango salsa one was. I still see the wasabi ginger one in the grocery store from time to time.

I had a small biscuits and gravy bag that I tried. It was ok. It wasn't a very strong flavor. I didn't dislike it but if I'm going to buy flavored potato chips I'd probably still just go with cheddar/sour cream, sour cream and onions or bbq over that.

Still none of these flavors at my local grocery store which doesn't surprise me. I did get to Walmart a few days ago and they had only one of the four--the Greektown Gyro, so I bought those to try. They were okay but nothing that would have me running out to buy more anytime soon. But I didn't find anything to hate about them either. If someone put them out at a party I would probably have a handful but they aren't a chip that I would start eating and finish off the bag because I couldn't stop eating them.

I'm still hoping to try the rest of the flavors eventually. I will be traveling around in four or five different states in a couple of weeks so I will likely come across the others.

Yeah. That's exactly how I am too. I don't hate them, I'll eat them. But a handful is fine. They aren't like Pringles or jalapeno cheetos that, to me, are farking delicious and it's hard to stop eating them.

That's where I got mine too. When I went to Publix the other day, they didn't have any of the new flavors even though they had them all the last time I went a few weeks ago.
