Didn't know that F1 had two female drivers compete in races back in the 50's and 70's.

Quote :
Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first woman to compete in a world championship Formula One [theguardian.com] grand prix, has died at the age of 89. The Italian started three grand prix races in a privately entered Maserati 250F, finishing a best place of 10th at Spa-Francorchamps in 1958.

The Naples-born driver had earlier tried to qualify for that year's Monaco Grand Prix, failing in her efforts along with another debutant, the future F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Both were too slow to qualify but there was no cut-off in Belgium, allowing De Filippis to qualify in last place. Nine of the 19 cars then failed to finish, and she crossed the line 10th.

*snip*

The late Lella Lombardi is the only other woman to start a Formula 1 race, making the grid in 12 grands prix between 1974 and 1976. Britain's Divina Galica, the South African Desire Wilson and the Italian Giovanna Amati have unsuccessfully tried to qualify for the races.

Sauber has had a pretty miserable time of it lately, I hope they can start turning it around now. Maybe start by killing the horrible blue and yellow paint scheme vomit I had really liked the older silver and white with red accents
At least it's easy to tell them apart on the track. laugh out loud

The blue and yellow remind me of High School football team colors. nod

My high school was at least blue and gold, that was better than the Sauber colors

"Bernie Ecclestone is the head of the Formula One car racing franchise and one of the richest men in Britain. His wife is Brazilian, and her mother was apparently grabbed by criminals in Sao Paulo, who are asking for a $37 million ransom from the billionaire.

"Information is scant and local press have said they won't report details in order to protect the victim. NPR contacted the anti-kidnapping police in Brazil, who declined to comment. Kidnapping in Brazil is rare these days, but security across the country has deteriorated on the back of a historic recession."

News of the kidnapping also comes as Brazil prepares to host the Olympic Games that'll be centered in Rio but will also feature events in several other cities, including Sao Paulo.

Bernie's MIL was rescued unharmed. No money changed hands and the kidnappers are in custody.

I just figured out today that the Formula E E-Prix of London happened on July 2nd, while I was in London. I had no idea laugh out loud they really need to do a better job of promoting their dates, I probably would have checked it out had I had any idea, but I never saw anything in London about it going on shake head

New Zealand lost one of its finest motor racing drivers with the death of Chris Amon today.

He passed away this morning in Rotorua Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was 73.

Along with Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme, Amon formed a three-pronged New Zealand challenge on the tracks of Europe and America who proved Kiwis could indeed fly.

Amon was, on paper, the least successful of the trio who graced the Formula One championship in the sixties and early seventies.

McLaren was highly regarded as a fine driver and engineer - the team he founded is a perennial Formula One favourite - and Hulme won the 1967 Formula One drivers championship.

But fellow drivers and team owners recognised that Amon possessed greater natural talent than McLaren or Hulme for driving at speed and had an unerring feel for setting up a car to go really fast.

"He is one of the most skilful and natural drivers ever to grace Formula One,'' three-times F1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart said.

It was considered one of the riskiest private equity investments ever.

CVC Capital Partners, a then-mid-sized London-based firm, paid a steep $2 billion in 2006 to buy Formula One, the world's dominant auto racing circuit. The timing wasn't great. A number of racing teams were threatening to bolt in a pay dispute. The deal's success also hinged on F1 founder Bernie Ecclestone, the famously domineering boss who would later sidestep bribery charges.

Yet a decade later, Formula One has turned into a spectacularly profitable deal for CVC, catapulting the former Citigroup Inc. unit into a top global buyout firm. CVC has made about $4.5 billion on its initial $1 billion stake, a 450 percent return that's twice the average for private equity. Much of that came when CVC loaded Formula One with debt to pay itself dividends -- too much so in the eyes of critics.

Now the firm is looking to exit the investment, possibly in a matter of weeks. After an aborted initial public offering in 2012, it's actively shopping the firm and has retained Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to solicit buyers. The price tag could be as high as $10 billion.

Mercedes protege Esteban Ocon is Pascal Wehrlein's new team mate after Manor announced that they have terminated Rio Haryanto's race deal, following the Indonesian rookie's failure 'to meet his contractual obligations'.

Nineteen-year-old Frenchman Ocon, who will make his maiden F1 race appearance in Belgium later this month, has been Renault's reserve driver this season, combining the role with his DTM campaign for Mercedes-AMG. Prior to that he won the FIA F3 Euro championship in 2014, and the GP3 Series in 2015.

I'm hoping the rumors of Rossi working out a better deal for next year are true, either with Andretti in Indy, or with a team higher than Manor in F1 nod

Interesting story about two girls age 14 and 16 from the UAE who are hoping to race in Formula 1 when they get older. The 16 yo is joining Formula 4 next season.

Quote :
Last year, the older of the two, Amna, became the first female Emirati driver to represent the country at an international event when she competed at the Rotax Max Challenge grand finals in Portugal. The races are considered a solid step into a career in motorsport.

*snip*

The girls' father is Khaled Al Qubaisi, a professional racing driver who made history this summer as part of the first Emirati team to claim a podium place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race with third place in the LMGTE Am class.

*snip*

In a few days, Hamda will compete in Sweden in the third round of the Commission Internationale de Karting- Federation Internationale de l'Automobile Academy Trophy.

She's placed 27 out of 51 after the first two rounds in France and Portugal. "I think that's a really good achievement for me," Hamda says. "I've never raced in an international level before. I think I can reach the top 10."

*snip*

"I want to go all the way to Formula One. Yes, it's a very difficult step, it's a huge step, but I'm working my way up. I'm very ambitious and dedicated."

Next year, Amna will progress to Formula 4, an open-wheel category for young drivers. It's the next rung up on the ladder from karting. The UAE launches the first Formula 4 championship in the Middle East and North Africa later this year. The first of its 18 rounds is on October 28 at Yas Marina Circuit.

A couple of weeks ago they combined right turns with rain in the Nascar Xfinity series. Most of those young drivers had never raced in the rain and spent more time off the track than on. laugh out loud
