Shutting off quality of service options for wifi fixes my speed issues on my internet through Comcast?!?!? What?!?!?

9,489 3,649 April 15, 2016 at 09:25 PM in Computers (3) Xfinity
For about six or so months now I've been having one issue or another with Comcast's internet. At first I was having it disconnect at 2 a.m. and stay off for 5-6 hours straight. This started happening around the time they pushed a new firmware to the modem I'm using(SBG 6580 combo modem/router).

To "fix" that they rolled back to the firmware before the one causing the issues and all was fine...for a while.

Then they rolled it back out a few months ago or so and my speed went from 150-160 Mbps down to around 1/3 of that.

I even had a tech come out on Wednesday to try fixing the issue if they could. They couldn't find anything wrong with the line coming into the house, so obviously they tried blaming my less than 3 year old modem/router combo for the issues.

Fast forward to tonight I'm checking Comcast's forums after having posted a thread that I'm STILL having issues with my speed or lack thereof. So I decided to try the suggestion the one user(SBG6580dude) mentioned and go into the wireless tab and shut off all the quality of service options then apply that.

Then for shits and giggles I did a speed test fully expecting to see NO change.

This is the results:

Still trying to figure out how shutting OFF quality of service options for the wireless portion of the unit helped the wired connection to get fixed.

Get an inexpensive lamp timer from Wal-Mart. Set it to turn off at 3 am or 4 am and back on 15 minutes later.
FYI: I finally did this this morning around 4:30 a.m. or so and left it off till almost 5 a.m. and my connection went from 30-40 Mbps up to 70 Mbps or so. Still not the full speed you're supposed to potentially receive(up to XXX Mbps) but much better than what I was receiving.

I borrowed one of the monster sized modem/router units from the local Xfinity office a few hours ago, brought it home, set it up and it's STILL only giving me 50-60 Mbps on the IPv4 setting, which is all that's currently supported on my SBG6580.

So I'm fairly confident that it's NOT my device now. Now I just have to return this monstrosity before Comcast decides to try charging me rent on it.

The borrowed unit also tested using IPv6(which my modem also did maybe 3 times out of all of the times I've tested it using speedtest and speedtest.xfinity) and that was in the 140-150+ Mbps range.

From what I hear though they're attempting to push ANOTHER new firmware through that may very well unlock IPv6 for the SBG6580, so maybe one of these days I'll have the speed I'm paying for.

We have Comcast and pay for Blast! internet, 75mbps. About 7 months ago our internet started getting really, really slooooow. They told us to buy a new modem, we bought a new modem. No change. They told us to buy a new router, we bought a new router. No change. They came out 3 different times and checked the cables. They have replaced the cables from my house to the easement and the cable from outside to the inside of my house. They have replaced all of the connectors. No change.

Now we play a game all week long called "who gets to call in and have the modem cycled?" Sometimes it gets cycled 10-12 times a week but it makes absolutely no difference in the speed.

They haven't the foggiest notion what the problem is but our internet speed is never more than 24 mbps. Sometimes it's only 11-13 mbps.

But they keep on billing me for Blast! internet. Mad Mad

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm listening.
Quoting myself and bumping this because I just got my latest bill and they raised my internet by $25. Ohmy We were paying $44.99 and now it's $70.95.

We run the speed test every day and the DL speed is NEVER more than 25 mbps. I called Comcrap this morning and they said they can "send someone out". If you read my original post, someone has been out here. Multiple times!!!!

Seriously, I'm at my wit's end. We have to have internet but I'm not sure how to handle this. I'm willing to drop cable TV completely but the CSR said internet alone will be $84.99 and that's still for the Blast! at 75mbps ... which we don't even get now. Mad

Any advice?

Not enough for you? You should be able to easily run 2 devices each watching video unless you are going for the top tier of HD streaming. We ran 3 tvs, ipad, kindle, 2 smart phones on 8 mbps and only times we had issues was when the iphones brute forced their appley will upon the wifi and did whatever updates they wanted. Turned off their wifi and things were fine.

Unless things have changed (and I severely doubt they have) the Blast! internet is "up to 75mbps" (followed by a wall of small print).
10 megs is pretty well sufficient for most needs.

Does that mean that we should be happy with paying $71 for Blast! 75mbps even though we never get more than 25mbps? Huh

I guess I don't understand what you mean.

It means your options are to either drop down to 10 megs, or pay $71 for more than 10 megs. Sucks, but that's how it is in the broadband market.

I went to their website to find their specific weasel words:

Complain and complain often and threaten to contact the PUC. If they still don't sort it out, then contact the PUC and file a complaint.

Ugh that's terrible! My parents are going through the same thing with Comcast, doesn't matter how often they come out, what they replace, Comcast swears there's nothing they can do and say everything is fine.

Yeah, that's more or less what I'd expect...
