The 2015 Diamondback Axis Sport is a cross-country mountain bike, whereas the 2015 Diamondback Overdrive Sport is a lifestyle mountain bike.

Cross-country bikes are designed to be lighter and more agile than other mountain bikes in order to handle a mix of climbing and descending over moderately technical terrain. They typically have 80-120 mm of front and/or rear travel.

Lifestyle mountain bikes are a type of hybrid bike, designed to combine the everyday functionality of a road bike and the off-road capabilities of a mountain bike. They are great entry level or "around the town" bikes. For more info: http://mountain-bikes.gearsuite.c...rive-Sport

Are mountain bikes to be used only on mountains? Would I look stupid riding this for casual rides in city with my kid on the carrier?

I see people ride Mt bikes around town all the time and I take mine with my kids on the concrete trails and its fine. I would like to have a road bike because I hear its faster and a better ride but I go to dirt trails more often.

Not at all. Mountain bikes can be ridden anywhere, they just aren't as efficient on pavement.

exactly, chinese parts are known fo poor metallurgy and quality control. ALL the more reason to not spend hundreds of dollars on a low end bike like this. minimize what you pay, but get the warranty to make sure that walmart eats the cost for the verry common and inevitable parts failures.

or you can spend closer to $500 and get a quality american product. but thats another story.
While $500 is not exactly the same as $300, what bike company is this?

went to buy a bike yesterday at Dicks and the dude in the store said "wait till tomorrow". Looked at the deals this am and had the bike by 1pm. theres limited stock, there was no green xl, so got the silver. the bike tech was super knowledgeable. 10% off if you sign up for their credit card. Don't want another line of credit so passed. strings attached.

What $500 bike is a "quality American product" that has better reliability/build than bikes assembled from Chinese parts?

I don't know anything about bikes. I haven't had one since I lent mine to a friend in high school and never got it back. I'm 5'11" will I be able to commute on this comfortably? It's about 8 miles to my job.
depends how in shape you are. I just did 10 miles on this bike and am really out of shape. it was a struggle and that was on a rail trail. depends on your terrain and fitness level I'd guess.

I have been looking for a bike to get around with for a while now. Even used bikes are pricey on CL so I figured half off a brand new bike is the best I'll get. Hope it's a good bike!

Thanks OP.

Wow, I guess my $770 Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc isn't quality enough. What a ripoff.

Very low quality components but great intro bikes I suppose. For retail you can do better, but at sales price, these are decent. If you just do occasional trail riding or fitness, it is a good start. You will probably outgrow them quick if you get into it though.

I have a Diamondback Menona a few years ago, wound up getting it for $160 (problem with the shipment). Not entirely happy with the geometry. Nice bike though, and decent equipment.

So, is this a substantial upgrade? I'd be willing to get rid of mine for a new one.

Just a few notes for those who are new at it.

* I like the disc brakes! Awesome when it is raining! Didn't think they'd be worth it, but I'm now a proponent.
* The thinner 700mm wheels are decent. Problems going in rocks and such though. Would this bike be that much worse on the road?
* Don't care for the geometry. Just kind of odd to me with the "stand up" riding position. Does not work well in wind, or when trying to get some speed. Would prefer a more lay down geometry, whatever that is called.
* Nice aluminum! No rust, of course.
* The seat and grips didn't hold up so well.
* Front shock is great! Really does a great job! I'm happy with a hardtail
* The peddles aren't great. They have no grip, especially when wet. I think mine are made to ride without shoes.

Here's what I have now. http://slickdeals.net/e/3801404-diamondback-menona-men-s-hybrid-bike-220-72-plus-tax-shipped-dick-s-online?v=1&src=SiteSearch

I purchased this bike last year and love it. Great bike for the price. You may want a new seat if you're the type who likes cushioning.
