Cross-country bikes are designed to be lighter and more agile than other mountain bikes in order to handle a mix of climbing and descending over moderately technical terrain. They typically have 80-120 mm of front and/or rear travel.
Lifestyle mountain bikes are a type of hybrid bike, designed to combine the everyday functionality of a road bike and the off-road capabilities of a mountain bike. They are great entry level or "around the town" bikes. For more info: http://mountain-bikes.gearsuite

So, is this a substantial upgrade? I'd be willing to get rid of mine for a new one.
Just a few notes for those who are new at it.
* I like the disc brakes! Awesome when it is raining! Didn't think they'd be worth it, but I'm now a proponent.
* The thinner 700mm wheels are decent. Problems going in rocks and such though. Would this bike be that much worse on the road?
* Don't care for the geometry. Just kind of odd to me with the "stand up" riding position. Does not work well in wind, or when trying to get some speed. Would prefer a more lay down geometry, whatever that is called.
* Nice aluminum! No rust, of course.
* The seat and grips didn't hold up so well.
* Front shock is great! Really does a great job! I'm happy with a hardtail
* The peddles aren't great. They have no grip, especially when wet. I think mine are made to ride without shoes.

The worlds largest frame mfg is Kinesis and they are Chinese. Fact is that they supply many frames for many higher end/big name companies: Felt, Bianchi, Trek, Jamis, Surley, OnOne, Giant, SOMA, etc. Fact is that many carbon frames/forks/wheels are made in China and are top quality and used by top tier models.
