The 2015 Diamondback Axis Sport is a cross-country mountain bike, whereas the 2015 Diamondback Overdrive Sport is a lifestyle mountain bike.

Cross-country bikes are designed to be lighter and more agile than other mountain bikes in order to handle a mix of climbing and descending over moderately technical terrain. They typically have 80-120 mm of front and/or rear travel.

Lifestyle mountain bikes are a type of hybrid bike, designed to combine the everyday functionality of a road bike and the off-road capabilities of a mountain bike. They are great entry level or "around the town" bikes. For more info: http://mountain-bikes.gearsuite.c...rive-Sport

I own this bike. I bought it last year when it was on sale for $350. I'm happy with it, but I'm a casual rider and don't beat up on it too much. For the money, it's a very nice bike. It's a bit on the heavy side for an aluminum frame bike. The seat is very uncomfortable (no cushioning), so I replaced mine with a $10 Vader saddle I found on Amazon. My only other criticism is the assembly at Dicks. I bought two bikes from them. One was assembled excellently and the second one rather poorly. So be sure to look it over closely and rider it before leaving the store...check for loose or missing parts and misalignments and have them fix those issues before taking the bike home.

For somebody that is going to use a bike for the sole purpose to attach a kids cart and ride mostly paved trails, is it worth spending $300? You can find them fairly cheap in department stores and I'm not sure if it would matter on the paved paths?
diamond backs are decent entry level bikes. If you are going to take it out about once a month at least I would spring for this over a $100-150 target/walmart bike.

The Kona is a MASSIVE step up from this Diamondback. It has a real air fork, much nicer drivetrain, and hydraulic brakes. The Diamondback is barely above a department store bike.

The Talon 4 has a comparable drive train but has hydraulic brakes which is a large step up from the Diamondback's mechanical brakes. It also has an extra 20mm of travel on the fork compared to the Diamondback. I'm not sure if the Suntour forks can have their travel adjusted like some Rock Shox forks so you'd have to do some resarch into it. The Talon also likely has a lighter frame. All that said, this Diamondback is not a bad bike for $300 if you want to do some light cross-country riding.

made in china, per the website. might as well buy a $150 dollar bike from walmart and get their 2 year unconditional warranty for $15. same quality, half the cost and walmart has to replace and install broken parts.
idiotic comment. absolutely false.

exactly, chinese parts are known fo poor metallurgy and quality control. ALL the more reason to not spend hundreds of dollars on a low end bike like this. minimize what you pay, but get the warranty to make sure that walmart eats the cost for the verry common and inevitable parts failures.

or you can spend closer to $500 and get a quality american product. but thats another story.
This is a $500 bike dumbass. It's on sale, thus FP.

I have a Diamondback Menona a few years ago, wound up getting it for $160 (problem with the shipment). Not entirely happy with the geometry. Nice bike though, and decent equipment.

So, is this a substantial upgrade? I'd be willing to get rid of mine for a new one.

Just a few notes for those who are new at it.

* I like the disc brakes! Awesome when it is raining! Didn't think they'd be worth it, but I'm now a proponent.
* The thinner 700mm wheels are decent. Problems going in rocks and such though. Would this bike be that much worse on the road?
* Don't care for the geometry. Just kind of odd to me with the "stand up" riding position. Does not work well in wind, or when trying to get some speed. Would prefer a more lay down geometry, whatever that is called.
* Nice aluminum! No rust, of course.
* The seat and grips didn't hold up so well.
* Front shock is great! Really does a great job! I'm happy with a hardtail
* The peddles aren't great. They have no grip, especially when wet. I think mine are made to ride without shoes.

Here's what I have now. http://slickdeals.net/e/3801404-diamondback-menona-men-s-hybrid-bike-220-72-plus-tax-shipped-dick-s-online?v=1&src=SiteSearch
You're comparing apples to oranges. This one is designed for trails with holes, roots, etc...thicker tires. Yours is for roads and very light trails.

I don't know anything about bikes. I haven't had one since I lent mine to a friend in high school and never got it back. I'm 5'11" will I be able to commute on this comfortably? It's about 8 miles to my job.
The 2.1 inch wide tires will be loud and inefficient on the road, but the bike is large and comfortable (with a modified seat). It feels like a Cadillac Escalade on the road--ie, overkill. If you want a faster, more efficient commute, a hybrid or road bike will be much better. I have one like this for MT biking, and a road with 32c tires (1.2ish inches thick) for commuting. It's good to have both if you live somewhere that you'll ride a lot.

Is this difficult to ride on paved trails? Uncomfortable etc

It's comfortable as the tires feel like balloons on pavement. But they are loud, wear out fast, and are inefficient (ie, slow) on pavement. Nothing wrong with that, just not optimum. These tires are made for trails.

would it kill them to make one with a carbon belt. i dont care for the chain anymore. looking to buy something soon.
You can get bikes with belts, but the price goes way up... The belt is more expensive to make. And, it would have an internal hub in the back, much more expensive. You would never come close to these prices with those options.

That's another story from another era..like 30 years ago. Do post up that $500. USA made bike. Hint: it doesn't exist.

The worlds largest frame mfg is Kinesis and they are Chinese. Fact is that they supply many frames for many higher end/big name companies: Felt, Bianchi, Trek, Jamis, Surley, OnOne, Giant, SOMA, etc. Fact is that many carbon frames/forks/wheels are made in China and are top quality and used by top tier models.
