I'd be surprised if anyone can legit do it without a firmware change. Even cell carriers greatly limit access to unlock codes. I know, I used to work for a major carrier, and was one of the few people that had access to unlock codes.

You must make a ton of money selling unlock codes?

The key words there are used to work for a major carrier. Understand that accessing said codes is logged, and that the codes themselves are phone specific. Not to mention that it usually is only management in very specific departments that has access. Once your contract is up, and providing your account is in good standing, you should be able to get your carrier to unlock your phone for you,

If the codes are logged, why some ebay sellers are selling the unlock codes with no trouble at all?
I think ebay sellers work for major cell carrier or known someone working there?

I've used them before. Had good success.

Focused on sellers who had lots of feedback on the service of unlocking the phone type in question.

More likely cell phone manufacturers (samsung, apple, etc). They are less likely to lose money by unlock codes getting out, so they probably safeguard them less. The reason that cell phone manufacturers keep the codes so restricted are twofold.
  1. Reduce theft (if a person has their phone stolen, it gets blacklisted (read put on a list of phones not to get activated or unlocked worldwide). Sidenote, it's kind of a bitch to get a phone off the blacklist, if it gets recovered. They also get out of paying for their phone.
  2. Make sure people ride out their contract, to pay off the phone. When you sign a two year contract, a person is paying a portion of their phone off with each month's bill. If you cancel early, you haven't paid off your phone, which is why most carriers have a payout fee to cancel early. Holding out the unlock code is in principle like a car lien holder holding on to a title, until you pay for the car.

I used this guy a couple months ago to unlock my AT&T iPhone 6. They were pretty quick and the unlock works great.

Also these services have some connection directly to the carrier, they have to. At least for At&t iPhones unlocks come from the carrier.

Interesting.
Does this mean anyone can buy a new phone. Then stop paying the 2 year contract. T-Mobile would ask customer to pay $350 termination fee or get BLACKLISTED.

Customer can pay this seller $75.82 to get the phone out of BLACKLISTED???

iPhone unlocks are a bit different than most, as they require a co-operative effort between the carrier and the manufacturer. They also take much longer to process, as they are not done with a code... They are done via a firmware update.

Once your phone is blacklisted, forget about it. As in throw it away, if you have no intention of getting your contract resolved. The only legit reason I see to get your phone unlocked, without reneging on your contract, is to be able to use another carrier's sim while traveling overseas (and have a local number there).

I have an old blacklisted iPhone 4S, that is nothing more than an alarm clock for me these days. Only carriers can do this, and even fewer people can do this than have access to unlock codes. I used to have to make a call to an internal only phone number, make a request and wait 30 minutes to check if it went through.
