I was going to suggest Goats milk too. I've heard it's better for young children because of the fat molecules (or something, I'm NOT a scientist!)..anyway they are smaller and easier to digest. Supposed to be better for adults too (especially if you are lactose intolerant). I was very surprised to learn the the US is one of if not the only country who's main milk source is cow's milk. Over 75% of the world uses goats milk..I have seen it in a few stores, also, you can look in your local phone book, or google it. Many cities have dairies, mine does, and the cost is comparable to cow's milk. It actually tastes better..sweeter.
i had never heard of goats milk till you guys told me...i am from a country (india) where it is only cows milk or buffalos milk (but not for kids)

I don't know that they are either good or bad. They just kinda pass through w/o digesting..I don't think it would cause her constipation..how old is she?

don't remember if you said you took her to the doctor. maybe they would have a suggestion. I don't know where you live, but here, it's been extremely hot, maybe extra fluids, like just plain water...bananas are good too...don't know why she's not chewing..maybe it's just a phase. My niece went through a phase where she just held her food in her cheeks like a chipmonk for the longest time...took forever to feed her!

My son (6) does that with his food. He just scarfs it down like a vacuum. It drives me nuts. laugh out loud

A few things I found by googling:

Constipation can be caused by a low fibre diet, inadequate liquid intake and excessive milk intake.

The best treatment for painful bowel movements is more of what you have been doing. Adding fiber and fluids to her diet regularly (not just when she is constipated) may help. Fiber can be found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, like whole wheat, bran, and oatmeal. Children should drink at least four to six glasses of liquids a day, and even more when the weather is warm. A stool softener (like mineral oil taken by mouth) coats the stool, making it easier for BMs to pass. Any little crack (scratch) in the skin where the stool comes out may also be contributing to painful BMs, so you might want to put a little Vaseline on the outside of the rectum. Suppositories usually are not needed regularly. Laxatives and enemas should be used only when recommended by her doctor.

These simple measures work for many children, but it does take time, so try to be patient. If this pattern continues, or you are feeling frustrated, review your daughter's progress with her pediatrician, who may have other suggestions

____________________________________________________________________

Fiber-rich foods such as whole-grain breads, broccoli, and cereal can help keep him regular. A good rule of thumb: Children should eat enough grams of fiber to equal their age plus five. (For example, a 2-year-old needs 7 grams of fiber each day.) This is not as daunting as it sounds an apple has 4 grams of fiber; a packet of instant oatmeal has 3. It's also best if the fiber is distributed equally among all three of your child's daily meals, rather than eaten all at once. Make sure, also, that he's getting adequate fluids: Water, diluted fruit juices, and prune juice are all good choices. And be careful not to give your child too many dairy products, which can cause constipation.

If, after modifying his diet, your 2-year-old is still constipated, consider giving him a teaspoonful of raw honey each morning to help soften his stools (check with his pediatrician first). Honey is a mild natural laxative that can be given without the recommendation of a healthcare provider (but never give it to a baby younger than one year babies are at risk of getting botulism from all types of honey). If nothing else works, talk to your child's pediatrician.

Never knew that before about honey - went and googled it and now am reading up on it laugh out loud Honey also works wonders on sore throats - I'm starting to like natural remedies more and more...

You guys have been so helpful in the chit chat thread to highlight other deals, so I wanted to return the favor and point out two that I have seen lately.

Walgreens Free Diapers week of 6/29 AND 7/20 (AND TRAINING PANTS)

$5 off $5 or more coupon at Borders.com
This deal is *amazing* so long as you don't mind how terribly slow the borders site is. I had over a dozen children's books shipped to a store today for $1.99! Read through the thread and if you have questions about it, feel free to PM me - I'll answer as soon as I can Smilie That deal ends August 8th
