People taking peelies (coupons) off items in the store

Do you think it is wrong or okay for people to take peelies (coupons) off of items in the store when they don't ever buy that item?

I have no idea whether it's illegal or not, but I do think it's more of a moral thing. I don't take peelies (as tempting as they are...). I think they should be used by people who actually purchase the product the peelie was stuck on. I feel bad when people buy things that obviously had a coupon on it, but they were not able to use it because it was already stolen by somebody else.

I am a firm beleiver that the company wants you to have them. If they didn't they would protect them. I don't believe in opening sealed products to get the coupons or if the peelies are completely part of the package (i.e. sealed in a packet that has to be cut). If it is peel or just hanging on the item, the company has to realize what is going to happen to the coupons. Besides, the MF put the coupons out to be used right? It isn't like you can use these on other items, they are still going to be used as intended.

I searched - couldn't find anything on this.

Is it legal or illegal to take a peelie from a product you are NOT purchasing?
Find the statute, i.e. "law" declaring the taking of peelies illegal and you'll have your answer. Smilie (Hint: no such federal or state legislation exists.)

What you just wrote is called question begging. That is, you phrased the question with the presumption of wrongdoing. It's not theft if it not wrong to take the peelie in the first place, which is something you haven't yet established.

Make sense now?

laugh out loud do you follow me to every thread? laugh out loud

Ok, ok. I've decided it's not illegal. It's a ethical thing... peelies have no cash value and they're meant to be taken.

Peelie hunting is fun. My mother trained me to do it as a very small child - I'd run along beside her as she was doing her shopping snatching peelies, hangtags, and blinkies. She'd stuff them all in her coupon pouch and go through them later. If she didn't need 'em, she'd place them next to the corresponding items on her next shopping trip. I see nothing wrong with taking 'em, and to this day, some 20 odd years later, I'm still grabbing any that I think I'll use. The only difference between 6 year old me and 26 year old me is that I only take the ones I'll actually use now :-P

Btw, I bumped this because MFH referenced it in another thread about this topic, and figured it wouldn't hurt. Don't hate me for bumping!

I was in Walgreen's a few days ago and one of the Jack Link jerky products had a peelie and I snagged it. (There were about 15 hanging there, I only took 1.)

Anyhow, there were 2 customers nearby and one saw me do it and just started going off on me to her friend, saying I had some nerve to just "snatch that coupon" and put it in my wallet.

Yeah, I was a tad sorry. But not because I took it ... only 'cause they saw me take it. Big Grin

I was so sad to have to pass up a fresh application of Pepperidge Farm bread peelies at Target yesterday. Store staff were at the end of the aisle doing some markdowns and there was no way I could avoid being watched, the employees were facing the freezer section doors.
