Sadly, the last of the "Original Seven" astronauts has left this Earth.

member when people looked up to astronauts...they were the heros back in the day. now the heroes consist of kim kardashian, justin beiber and any other celebrity who plays make believe. Then you also have a dude that becomes a fake woman and gets the "woman of the year" award. These are the new age heroes.

john glenn was a boss!

I don't think times have changed as much as you believe they have. people have always looked up to musicians/celebrities, even during the era you are referring, to like they do now (although I don't, and I don't know why people do).

but we also have those worthy of being looked up to like we did astronauts. Elon Musk is making huge strides for the space program. Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the world's top cosmologists. Stephen Hawking leading the way for the science of theoretical physics. and Hanson leading the way on major breakthroughs in the field of Mmmbops. just gotta know where to look, FHRITP.

I thought you were referencing chris hanson...a pioneer at entrapping unsuspecting adults who may or may not want to have sex with minors but convincing them they should anyway.

Government lies about everything. Don't know if we actually did get to space.

Was trying to recall the names of the original seven but could only come up with five of them. Had to look up the other two on wiki and got to looking at all the astronaut's stats.

What is interesting is how many of the astronauts lived well into their 80's, with a few exceptions. I wonder if that's simply due to them keeping in shape in their later years or perhaps something to do with NASA's screening process.

It would be interesting if the screening process really did find the people at the deep end of the gene pool. Especially since they were pretty much making it up as they went along.

IIRC, they had some pretty strict guidelines for who qualified as a candidate. Maybe not with the original seven but with the astronauts that came after them.

Oh yeah, it was insane. But for the Original Apollo guys there was no precedent and no guidelines. The president wanted test pilots - beyond that it was 'what can we throw at these guys to see if they'll survive.'
I really need to read The Right Stuff. I've seen the movie a bunch of times, but I've heard there's a lot more details on that kind of thing in the book.
