Monday I got a $250 gift card with no advance notice.
It really depends on the company.
I just wanted to say NEVER allow these criminals access to your computer. NEVER give them personal information. Its a big scam. Their is no way they could remotely tell your system was infected or missing a patch, or any of the other excuses they may use.
They are trying to get you to log onto a site where they can control your computer and:
1) Install spyware and programs to steal your personal data.
or
2) Do absolutely nothing, and charge you to make repairs they have never made.
Do NOT fall for these scams.
While an obvious scam, I looked it up and they seem to be getting more and more clever. At first glance, the address on the envelope looks to be handwritten and the signature inside does as well. Looking closer, you can see that it's actually printed. The way it works is that you call the number provided and they try to get your credit card information one way or another. Either as a form of identification or to pay a "service charge".
This scam seems to date back at least two years with basically the same information inside but with different telephone numbers, different letterheads, and a different amount that the tickets are supposedly worth.

I am not worried about it being a scam / condo thing since I know I entered the contest and like I said above it's a major notification firm. Let me know what you guys think in terms of accepting. I do know the IRS rules regarding prize value so I most likely will not be getting a 1099 for the entire 1,200.
Advice, stories and such are appreciated. The main reason I entered this contest was a secondary prize, that would have been much easier to accept!
