yes. you can do that at most stores as far as I know. or just buy and return with old receipt if they give you trouble.

I thought they only check the serial on the box with the unit inside the box? does the serial get recorded on the receipt as well?
**EDIT** Looks like Augusta is out, but 04901 just up 95 from there has them for $35.
Then I thought to myself "When is the last time I even used my CD player?

may be difficult since those consoles are very very unique and not a standard plug and play dash.
I'd wait for the pioneer 4200NEX. I've seen 2 deals here in past few months at good prices on SD.
