HP Stream won't boot - Can't get into BIOS

I've been working on an HP Stream - Model 11-d010wm for a child... Basically it just shows the HP logo, goes black, HP logo, black, etc... I hit escape to get into HP settings, but can't.... hit all the functions keys.... I just can't figure it out... I just really want to help this kid out... great kid, but unfortunately buying a new device just isn't an option.... Hopefully I can get this thing up and running for him... Any insights would be appreciated...

Did you try: To start Setup Utility (BIOS), turn on or restart the computer, quickly press esc, and then press f10.

The System Test runs from the Startup menu. It checks the main components of your computer to make sure they are working properly. Use the following steps to run the System Test to check for problems.
  1. Press and hold the Power button until the computer turns off completely.
  2. Turn on the computer. Immediately press the Esc key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu is displayed.
  3. Press the F2 key. The System Diagnostics screen is displayed.
    NOTE:
    Your diagnostics screens might vary slightly in look and color, but the menu items and selections remain the same.
  4. Click System Tests.
  5. Click Extensive Test.
  6. Click Run Once. The test could take several hours, depending on the configuration of your system.

tried em.... just continued to cycle... Even if the hard drive was dead, I'd think it'd still be able to go into BIOS...

Maybe not with the wonders of "secure boot".

Does pressing the escape key repeatedly (I'd press it a lot more than HP says) do anything?
Try re-seating the ram
Try an external keyboard
Try plugging in a bootable flash drive or hard drive

If you have a extra HDD I would try the other drive and a Windows installed USB drive

Brilliant! An external keyboard! Luckily I had one sitting around that my 11 month old loves ... it's actually in his toy bin... Anyway, we are up and running finally... doing diagnostics now... Thanks! Will update later... THANKS!

Only thing I couldn't get to pass was the keyboard, but still can't get past that HP screen to black to HP on loop... Like I can get into HP settings, but that's it... and I changed boot sequence to usb key as #1.. tried to boot from a usb with windows 10... no luck....

This was a pain... so got windows booting by reformating the drive... nothing else worked... but the keyboard and mouse don't work at all... even before booting windows 10... I've been using external on both.... the mouse on the laptop I think worked, but the keyboard never did.... tried uninstalling and reinstalling any devices by scanning for hardware changes, uninstalling, rebooting... anything else I can do? As far as I can tell, the ribbons are hooked to the motherboard just fine...

Does it now boot without the USB keyboard and mouse plugged in?

Computers sometimes do odd things when one or more keys on the keyboard are stuck, hence my suggestion to mash on the keyboard. Unplugging it from the motherboard could also be a useful test, but most likely you're looking at replacing the keyboard.

Any history of things getting spilled on the computer / keyboard?

Just to be thorough, you might want to try a linux live disc.

yea...no problems with usb keyboard/mouse..works fine after reinstalling windows....works in bios..., but the ones built in don't work at all in bios or windows...

  • In Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software:
  • In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
  • Click View and select Show Hidden Devices.
  • Show hidden devices in Device Manager
  • Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.
  • Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.
  • Restart the notebook. Right-click Start (), select Shut down or sign out, then select Restart

A friend had similar issues with her new Stream and had to send it in to HP. I believe it doesn't have a real HD, that it's a web device. It went round and round.
