This is a heck of a deal overall.

Current gen CPU
16:10 display (albeit 45% NTSC which sucks, but again, under $400 compromise here)
16 GB of RAM (definitely not something common under $400)
USB-C that supports charging and monitor out (doesnt mention thunderbolt but seems like its close to being that?)
Not a completely laughable battery at 56.6wh (lots of laptops this cheap will have sub 50wh batteries)
It even has a 1080p webcam, not 720p
Tons of I/O including 2 USB-A, 2 USB-C, HDMI, micro SD card reader...

These are all features combined that make this a really good deal overall for the price. My hones only gripe is getting a SLIGHTLY better display than the garbage 45% NTSC ones, but if thats the only real compromise of this laptop (not only 8 GB of RAM, no USB-C charging/displayout/thunderbolt, 720-p webcam, etc etc) its something you can live with.
Also, it has an aluminum case, not plastic, according to the Q and A.

Is the RAM upgradeable to something like 32GB? It says soldered but no indication of there is a free slot for additional memory.
There are no free slots in this laptop. All ram is soldered.

Yes B&H Photvideo are reliable and usually offer fast shipping for free - I've bought laptops from them over the years and never had a problem with them.

Do you have any experience regarding the point of returning any product?

Well, do you recommend purchasing it from them? Another thing I know it's a silly question but I have to ask it! it's my first time buying anything from their website it's a new laptop right!? not refurbished or used cause they don't have something like condition: new or anything that indicates the product's condition!
If you want clarity on their defective / damaged policy chat or call.
BH Photo has been around for a while and is reputable. I would recommend them.
Yes, it is brand new, not refurb / used. They are also a Lenovo authorized dealer.

In fact I called them this morning to price match the $399.99 as I ordered it four days ago for $459.99. Hopefully I get that credit, but the request will take a few days.

In other threads, it's been stated that LPDDR5, by design, needs to be soldered. So if that is true, there are no upgradeable slots in any laptop with this type of memory. A quick google on the topic pretty much confirms that. This is the new normal for thin or light laptops.

"You might also see LPDDR5x RAM listed if you're shopping for a thin and light device. This standard is an offshoot of LPDDR5, designed to offer even better performance and efficiency. One last thing to note is that LPDDR5 and LPDDR5x RAM is soldered straight to the device's mainboard. This means you can't upgrade it after purchase."

Yup, straight from Lenovo's PSREF website:

"Memory soldered to systemboard, no slots, dual-channel (16GB models)"

I got the i7 version of this laptop w/ 1TB in december for $600 ish. I use it for school and browsing and really like it. It's a little heavy but still portable enough to lug it around in my backpack everyday. Aluminum case feels high end. I was disappointed in the battery life at first, but the power settings are pretty customizable and now I'm happy with it. I have it set to only charge up to 80% to preserve battery life, and I'm able to use it for about 6 hours without it getting too close to running out of power. The charging brick it comes with is large and clunky, so I replaced it with a tiny anker 65W charger and 10' usb cable for the backpack.

I don't use it for anything processing-intensive so I never even hear it cooling. The screen is nothing to write home about, but it's fine for my needs. Camera is great. There's a fingerprint reader that's quick and works pretty well. My only complaint is that the keyboard backlight always reverts back to being on after I wake it up. Annoying but not a huge deal.

If you need something for work/school/word processing/browsing this is a great deal. If you want to game or use photoshop or any more resource intensive tasks, I can't speak to that.

Oh also, I tried to run Tails on it, and it won't recognize the wifi adapter. So if you're into that, you'll need a physical connection or external wifi adapter

I bought it a few days ago for $459.99 after tried a similar one at my local Costco. I though it was a good deal, now for $399.99 it's a great deal! FYI, when the seal of the box is broken, the store will not accept the return, otherwise you pay about $10 for return shipping.

Is this durable enough for middle school kids rough handling? I teach Tech and needs a set of new Windows laptops.

No laptop short of a Panasonic Toughbook is durable enough for middle school kids rough handling. But this is of pretty good build quality as thin&light laptops go.

Probably more durable than most budget laptops since it is aluminum instead of plastic.
Also MIL-STD-810H military test passed (20 test items) from the specifications link I posted earlier.
Will it survive middle schooler abuse? Probably not.

This one or the Costco 15.6" i5 16 GB Dell for $399?

Costco Dell is touch screen; but no backlit keyboard. It looks like most of the other key specs are similar. Dell Vs Lenovo. Any recommendations?
