really slow internet browsing and download but fast speedtest?

6,208 3,405 April 15, 2017 at 07:56 PM
My internet browsing especially in the evening is really turtle slow but googles speedtest shows that my internet speed is 25-30mbs down and 1-3mbs up. I have comcast and was happy with it until a few months ago when the rain started and everything slowed to a crawl and has become nearly unusable. I had thought it was just a temporary thing on comcasts end because of the rain but now its dried up a bit and the speedtest seems to suggest that the network is fine.

-Fairly sure its not malware since I have scanned my pc and the slow internet is a problem across all devices on the network including iphones, ipads, other computers etc
-I do use ccleaner so its not that either

Any thoughts? Thanks! SmilieSmilieSmilie

Your Internet speed is fast

Your Internet connection should be able to handle multiple devices streaming HD videos at the same time.
but sometimes if I retest it, it shows a really slow speedtest

Your Internet speed is slow

Your Internet connection should be able to handle one device at a time streaming a video. If multiple devices are using this connection at the same time, you may run into some slowdowns.

My father has Comcast and occasionally when I visited him I would notice his internet was very slow. Verified it with Speedtest and told him to reboot his modem and it generally did the trick. That's all I know. Maybe the experts will chime in and offer a better suggestion.

There are other ISP speed tests that you can try, too. T-Mobile used to whitelist Speedtest.net and not accurately reflect your actual speed when they throttled you. Don't think Comcast does but you try anyway and get a second reference point.

Most ISP do try to make sure speed test gives positive results.

Try http://testmy.net

Came here to say this exact thing, ISPs are known to prioritize or unthrottle traffic to Speedtest because it is so frequently used and well known.

ok I have a kind of strange update.

I fired up my vpn and to my surprise when my vpn is on, everything works fine, youtube streams at 1080p etc
but vpn off and everything slows back down to snail speed.

Is this an isp port throttling issue or a router problem? I have a netgear nighthawk r7000 and a motorola surfboard cable modem (i've tried resetting both my modem and router too)

that latency is awful...

if your equipment is newish, I'd assume it was a line problem from your house to street or substation or whatever.

I was thinking the same thing. FPS on that would make me move.... You're dead before you even start

Same thing went on in Florida. Comcast knew the lines were deteriorated and in no hurry to fix...rain gave that away too
I feel ripped off

if VPN helps, then it's high chance of packet loss, because VPN is like a single established connection, it knows when a packet is lost, send another one right away, there're settings even for heavy packet loss, it sends duplicated packets on purpose.

browser makes connections for every small elements, and waits too long to resend the request if lost.

usually packet loss because of rain needs your ISP's fix.

This usually equates 100% to DNS. It's an insanely frustrating process as changing your DNS often can be the only solution at times. Here is what I suggest. Download DNS bench (very tiny program, and well known) and keep it on your desktop. Run it and select "nameservers" tab. Let it run through the available DNS servers nearest you. When it is done, select the one with the fastest response that has a green circle or green dot (colored in green circle). Then go to your internet / network icon bottom right of your computer's tool bar. Right click and open network and sharing. Top left click change adapter settings. Right click your local area connection and go to properties. Highlight internet protocol version 4 (tcp/ipv4) and click properties. Click use the following dns server address and type in the IP you got from DNS bench then click OK.

If you have trouble again in the future, just select obtain automatically directly above it instead. Then if the problem persists do your DNS bench again and use the fastest responding dns. I hope this helps. This always fixes my problem with slow responses to web sites even though my speed test shows better.

Are you running these tests with a wired or wireless connection? I agree your latency is terrible and if your on a wired connection I would open a ticket with Comcast after verifying your equipment is normal.

If you don't get anywhere with Comcast tech support - and you might not - not all of their ducks are swimming in the same pond when it comes to knowledge - get over to the Comcast section of dslreports.com and post there. There are Comcast employees who can help and they are very good.

Thank you so much, I've had this problem for months and your solution worked! Thank you!
