Opossum vs Possum

Just found out today that these are 2 different creatures. I thought they were just different ways of saying the same thing.

Opossum are native to North America. They have a white face and nake rat-like tail with white-gray fur. Many people in the South and Mid West refer to Opossums as Possums.

Possum are native to Australia. They have furry tails and can range in color from Silver, to gold, black, and brown. They are more related to Kangaroos than North American Opossums.

Opossum was named by an explorer in North America first. He took it from a Native American language literally meaning "white dog or beast." Then when Europeans visited Australia they noticed that the Possums were similar to the Opossum and named them accordingly in reference to their similar looks.

Many people in the South and Mid West also refer to country music legend George Jones as "The Possum".

Scratchchin That reminds me of another thread. Gotta go...
