Facepalm total brain fart, forgot about the other thread, I'm looking at it now.

I don't have a hotel yet. it looks like some of the hiltons will let me use the Government rate even without official travel (some hotels do, some don't), which looks to be $98/night +tax, and between 25 and 30/night for parking, if I drive

the Hilton Garden Inn and another Hilton are between Canal and Poydras. is there a point where you've gone to far in that direction and its no longer safe to walk around at night?

The drawback to the Hilton hotels is they're quite a ways from the French Quarter and more importantly, they're not in a safe area. I wouldn't want to be in that area after dark. Nono

The French Quarter is safer simply because they don't want tourists getting mugged or shot so they have better policing of the FQ.

that's why I asked, I know in cities that two or three blocks can make all the difference in the world. not knowing anything, I don't know what the exact boundaries of the french quarter are, some of the hiltons say FQ in the name, but it's hard to tell how populated things are

You don't want anything near Canal street (aka: the Central Business District) so try to get closer to Jackson Square. Then to the North of the quarter, Rampart Street is dodgy and to the east, Governor Nichols is the start of the dodgy area.

So for considering a hotel, use these streets as the edge of where you get a hotel. Conti to the west, Dauphine to the north, Ursulines to the east.

this is why I wonder about visiting New Orleans, it seems like there's a lot to worry about, and other than drinking stories, I never hear that much about what to do there

anyway, enough messing around for a Sunday night, I really need to get to bed.

g'night AMT Bye

It's just like with any other city, you need to know which areas are safe and which to avoid. Only in New Orleans, the tourist area is much smaller than say in New York or Miami.

There's also a lot more to New Orleans than just drinking. I'm not a drinker yet I love New Orleans for the music, the food, the wonderful people there as well as the history and architecture of the city. As a photographer, you would love the photo opportunities there. New Orleans is the most European of any city in the US. It's the next best thing to going to Europe.

It's late and I'm headed to bed but I'll pm you tomorrow with some stuff that I think you would enjoy.
