Sprint stores are not able to add additional free lines.
It will be a paid line if they do it. They sell commissioned products only.
See the wiki: WARNING - DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS DEAL IN-STORE!!!
You cannot do it online either. You cannot do it through customer service.
Just call 866-782-8777 - that is the only way to do it. You have to port in a number as before.
It is not necessary to reinvent the wheel from scratch.
Just got off the phone with the number provided. Agent would not let me add on a line to my BYOD plan unless I brought the phone and provided them with an IMEI/MEID. They said I could do it; however, I would need to change my plan. She even spoke with a supervisor. Either of the two occured:

1) Usually in most instances; its about who you talk to. I probably was talking to a bunch of morons and should try calling back sometime tomorrow morning.

2) Deal is dead for FREE BYOD

Hopefully it is the former; rather than the latter.

Very strange. Did they say WHY?
The text at https://www.sprint.com/en/shop/of...:1yearfree
says:
"Add a Line: Add a line at any time with port-in from postpaid carrier and Bring Your Own Eligible Phone up to the max. number of lines & get promotional pricing until 1/31/2019."

You could ask them which part of this is at issue. (I doubt it is the postpaid carrier requirement - that has never been enforced.)

But more likely, as you note, your call got re-routed to a different call center because of overload and the overflow call center handles a million different things and does not understand the offer. Some people have reported this happening and just called later and had no problem then. I think that is the most likely explanation. Yes, try again preferably during the day.

But, reading your post more carefully, you DO have to bring the phone and provide them with an IMEI/MEID. (Plus a number to port in).

Did you not do that?

Beware, SPRINT is a big fraud. Don't fall for it.

I switched to Sprint from T-mobile in the month of June. They said that I can upgrade to a new phone after 4 months. I went to Sams club yesterday as they had one day sale and were offering $300 gift card on any iPhone. Sprint didn't allow me to upgrade and said that I cannot keep the same free rate plan if I were to upgrade. They told me that I will have to switch to the $65 per month unlimited plan if I want to upgrade. I had heated arguments with multiple customer service agents and wasted the whole day & gave up. I am waiting for my 1 year of free service to end. I will switch back the next day.

Once again, this offer is a big fraud.

Somebody rightly said in the comments that "Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service."
Sprint blocking upgrades through 3rd parties who they are liable to pay commissions to isn't fraud. You calling this plan a fraud is ridiculous, in my opinion. Such over the top hyperbole. It's a BYOD plan. Getting the perks of 3rd party upgrades would be nice but not getting them doesn't make the deal a fraud.

Incredible that free service is being called a fraud. Wow. If you can find a better deal somewhere else, please let all of us know.

Any lines being added still need to follow the rules of the free BYOD plan. Numbers must be ported in, and you must use a phone compatible with Sprint. How exactly were you trying to add a line?

I was attempting the deal online (Adding a line to the FREE BYOD Plan); they were trying to change my phone to some $140 plan. Obviously did not go through with it. Ill stop by the Sprint store tomorrow and see if they will do it. However, I do live in NY; but my address is setup in FL. Will provide you guys with an update tomorrow.

You omitted a third scenario (probably THE MOST CORRECT)
You, the customer, is not equipped with proper knowledge, and is jumping to incorrect conclusions {(2) Deal is dead for FREE BYOD}...no it is not]

First of all, what exactly are u trying to do? It is unclear.

You are adding a line.
Great.
what kind of line?
do u want it to be fee?
if yes..then IT MUST BE PORTED, and you must bring your own device...(as rep told u u must have imei number)..these are the requirements for a free line..at any time

do u want a phone with it?
then it must be paid line.

lastly, read up on the deal.
it is very clear...do not go to store to do this

. Ill stop by the Sprint store tomorrow and see if they will do it.

...do not go to store to do this

It was my mistake. we are talking about two different deals. I was referring to the sprint essential phone deal.

I am already a free BYOD customer. I have ported over 3 numbers from t-mobile.

I wanted to add another line and do the sprint flex lease for the essential phone. csr told me for this plan you cannot add a line and all you can do is port numbers over to join this free plan.

good for u to own up to mistake.

now let still try to get u what u need.

so are any of your free lines eligible for upgrade? if yes, then problem solved.

if no, then u can still get the essential.
what u need to do is call the special number for the free plan.
let them know u want another paid plan on your account. this is possible.
i havent dont it but others have.
then u get your phone, pay it off, port the number away to h20.

your free lines should remain intact.

I got my hands on a nexus 5.
But I don't have any phone number I can port.
So I'm looking at creating an account with a carrier just to port it to sprint
Which carrier should I get a sim a activate it before switching to sprint with this offer?
Regarding price to set up and delivery or accessibility in store and easiness of phone number porting?

Thank you

(edit) Can I just create a new google voice number and pay the $3 to be able to port it?
Will it works even though the google voice number was never used on the actual nexus 5?
