the post was from over 1 year ago.

my understanding of the situation is as follows:

IIRC, it was around that time when sprint was transitioning away from the 2 year contract phones (2YC)

back then, u would get a cheap/free phone with a 2YC, and had to pay a "higher" monthly plan

after the transition

u had to pay for phone, no contract and the monthly fee for "equivalent" plan was less

issue was in that transition, some plans (mostly family) had phones in 2 YC and some off contract.
the users then would like to go to these cheaper equivalent plans (now with unlim t/t )
to mange this issue, sprint was assessing this $25 a month subsidized phone charge

now, all that is behind us, there shouldn't be this charge

unless, u go to apple, get a phone with 2YC, while u are on this cheaper equivalent plans
Thanks for the advice. The issue is that my wife's phone is actually still on one of the old-style 2 year contracts. It is on a legacy Sero plan, and Sprint continued subsidized contracts on these plans for a while even after they had been otherwise phased out. The iPhone 7 was purchased subsidized in September 2016, and it is under contract and subject to an early termination fee.

I don't think the "subsidized phone charge" would be the problem because I would be activating the phone under a different account with a different name and SSN. I think the problem would be that the phone would fail the Financial Eligibility check and Sprint would not activate it on the new account. There also may be a problem getting Spring to unlock the phone to port to GSM before porting back to Sprint. I am willing to pay the Early Termination Fee to get out of the contract, but I am just not sure how quickly Sprint would clear the phone to port back in on a different account. I think technically it should be OK once the ETF is paid, but it seems too risky to try this on my wife's main phone line without talking to someone else who has done the same thing. I guess there are so few people on the old-style 2 year contracts that no one else has experience with this. It seems like the safest thing to do is to wait until the 2 year contract expires in September before porting out and then back in to our other account on the free plan.

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

I know that a couple of people have posted in more recent threads that they were being charged the subsidized phone charge of $25 a month, but I do not know the circumstances and could not find them now. They might easily be special cases or errors or who knows what.

The S9 not listed yet but my guess unbranded at the least would be eligible. They will use yet another sim 406TQ. I think the multi punch 506TQ(isim v2) may work also.

LTE Calling Beta is available on the S8 Sprint ROM.

If you have the Verizon, TMO, or AT&T model, it should switch automatically to the Sprint configuration if you are up to date on OTA updates. Then you would also have Sprint LTE Calling Beta.

If you have the unbranded ROM, you are out of luck (and get no Visual Voicemail either) so I would suggest flashing to the Sprint (or other branded) ROM if you are comfortable doing that.
I got my s8 from samsung directly.. How do you flash the ROM?

I understand. By the way you can buy both branded and unbranded models directly from Samsung.
But I assume you got the unbranded one since you do not have LTE Calling..
That's fine, the unbranded one works well, but it does not at this time offer LTE Calling on Sprint or Visual Voicemail.
Flashing is complicated and is outlined on the xda-developers site.
At this point the Oreo update is about to be released in a few weeks so I would wait for now to see if that brings any improvement. Unfortunately again, the updates for the unbranded version are often substantially delayed.

Thanks for the info. The Sprint version is also going to be accepted of course since all Sprint models are accepted although not listed explicitly.
I would suggest people not buy the unbranded version since they get a better end result in my opinion by buying the Sprint version and unlocking it after 50 days on Sprint to work on all carriers. That way they get all Sprint features (especially above all else LTE Calling beta, and also Visual Voicemail) and can still unlock it after 50 days.

FYI sprint does offer unlimited INTL plan for $5. Once you re signed up and create mysprint login, go under services. This is the same area to add WiFi calling
I thought you can't added the $5/day or $25/week extra data pass service with 1-year free plan under mysprint website. Read that people get a text message welcoming them to the country and a link to upgrade (intlroam.sprint.com)

Hmmmm I know I added it for a few days to make a call to Canada and my bill was pro rated when I canceled.

I don't see why you can't add an added service and pay $$ for it.

EDIT: I m wasn't referring to the the 1 day or weekly data pass. Isn't there a international roaming (Canada Mexico for $5/month) ??

Yes I think the latter is correct. Unfortunatelty the Portal includes add-ons that are not available on this plan.
From the Sprint DAQ's for this plan:
Quote :
Are international services included?
Yes, our 1 Year Free Unlimited plan includes Sprint Global Roaming, which includes data up to 2G speeds and text messaging in any of our 165+ Global Roaming countries at no charge, plus calling for just $0.20 a minute.

It does not include calling from the U.S. to international locations, but you can easily add international calling to your plan.

So yes, there is the Mexico-Canada Plus Calling add-on - $5/mo. which is linked to on Sprints FAQ page. However it is calling not roaming. You will still get free 2G data roaming. Thanks for mentioning that it can be prorated! That changes everything!

You cannot add plans like Premium Intl Experience and low cost add-ons designed for that. Try it and you will get a confirmation but they will cancel it overnight.

Yes that's what I was reffing to, the $5 per month to call Canada and Mexico. Not bad for $9.42 (for me w/ tax).
